Dear <<First Name>>,

What makes a circular economy feasible? Standardisation? Financial gain? Simplicity? A mental exit from the system — or Mexit, as Thomas Rau calls it? Absolutely! And let's not forget the role of data. Because access to data on materials encourages owners, builders, researchers and supervisors, worldwide, to use and reuse materials and makes it possible to design every building as a repository of materials with a set value.

This newsletter tells you more about this, providing much food for thought for the holiday period. Meanwhile, we wish you a good summer and we’ll be back in September.

New release Madaster Platform
Two weeks ago, the Madaster Platform underwent a complete metamorphosis, fully accommodating the wishes of our partners and customers. The platform has a new user interface with a multitude of new and improved functionalities.
Navigating the platform is now easier than ever. Account and folder structure are flexible and can be arranged entirely to the user’s own preferences. Convenient for a versatile organisation! The matching & enrichment tool has also been fully upgraded. Especially an improvement for organisations with the focus on facilitating building-related information. The new technical infrastructure not only provides the required flexibility, but also increases ease of use. For an impression, please watch this introduction video.

This is a first, important step in a series of larger improvements to the platform that will be implemented over the course of 2020. Are you interested in becoming a user and/or curious about how the Madaster Platform works? Would you like to know more about the possibilities of making your real estate more sustainable through registration? Please contact us via info@madaster.com and we will be more than happy to tell you more about it.

Launch of Swiss Madaster Platform
Since 1 July, Madaster has been available in Switzerland, both in German and in French. Owners of Swiss real estate can register their properties on this Madaster Platform, from where material passports for buildings can be generated. These passports show the financial and circular value of a building’s registered materials and products. The Madaster Platform enables partners to integrate innovative solutions, such as marketplaces and real estate evaluation.

‘We are delighted that Switzerland is the first country where the platform will be rolled out, internationally. Thanks to our strategic partners in Switzerland, the construction and real estate sectors are sending a clear signal about digital and circular innovation.’ - Thomas Rau, co-founder of Madaster

Development of the Environment Register
Private citizens, knowledge institutes and government authorities are able to use the Environment Register to gain insight into the materials used in real estate objects and infrastructure. The Register provides data from various informational sources — including Madaster — via maps, infographics and downloadable data sets.

In this way, Cirkelstad and Madaster are aiming to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy.  Because access to data on materials may stimulate owners, builders, researchers and supervisory bodies to use or reuse materials in such a way that their waste can be prevented. Joran Straatman, Advisor Circular Economy, is working on the development of the Environment Register and explains more about it, in his blog post.

The added value of Madaster
The financial aspect of circular construction a limitation? On the contrary! Mitchell Gmelich (Director of Van Draeckeburgh) and Rob Oomen (Partnership Manager Madaster) already wrote about the MIA/VAMIL scheme, which can result in a 9% net tax advantage for the owners of a Madaster material passport. In addition to the social, legal and ecological urgency of registering materials in buildings, registration may also create financial value, and interesting possibilities may emerge for new business models. Sander Beeks (Business Support Madaster) provides additional information, using two typical examples in his blog post.

Buro Kade is one of the first architectural firms to join the Madaster Partner network
Last week, Buro Kade and Madaster signed a partnership agreement. Buro Kade is working on valuable BIM models, both for internal and external use, and is modelling from the earliest moment possible. The architecture firm believes in an open collaboration on software-independent file formats; a so-called 'open BIM' structure that lays the foundation for a good material passport. Through this collaboration, Buro Kade gives a boost to circular construction by completing the Madaster registration, including a material passport, for its projects.

‘Design decisions during the construction process have a large impact! Design flaws are never sustainable.’ - Michael Bol, City Planner at Buro Kade
