Welcome to 3 Point Thursday!

Each week I'll send you the three most compelling ideas, facts, studies and/or products related to nutrition, health and wellness that I have to share.

  • Nurturing the gut-brain connection
The term "gut" refers to the 30 foot hose that goes from esophagus to anus and is also called our digestive system or tract or gastrointestinal/GI system or tract.

How we nourish the gut, nourishes the brain and how we nourish the brain, nourishes the gut. Stress in one equals stress in the other.
The gut and the brain are literally connected by the vagus nerve, our body's information superhighway.

Our entire anatomy is affected by the gut-brain connection because the gut and the brain signal everything else to operate efficiently.
So if the gut, the brain, or the connection between the two is compromised, our overall health is at risk.
Therefore the consistent nurturing of this connection is fundamental to excellent health and a great place to focus our efforts when it comes to increasing overall health.

Two main components of our gut-brain connection:
  • Neurotransmitter production
At least 90% of serotonin and 50% of dopamine (the main neurotransmitters responsible for making us feel good) are produced in the gut, specifically in the intestines. This fact in itself tells so much of the story...

If we're not putting proper nourishment into our guts, they won't produce and regulate secretion of the neurotransmitters we need to feel good in our moods and state of mind, not to mention all the other functions these vital neurotransmitters carry out for us.

  • Secure gut lining
One of the most important aspects of digestive health is a strong gut lining.
Psychological and emotional stress weakens the chemical process that keeps this gut lining impenetrable.

This lining, made up of cells and smooth muscle, is what protects and separates the inside of our bodies from the outside world, and a strong gut lining is imperative to our health as a whole.

Having a damaged or ripped gut lining is what is referred to as "leaky gut", because it becomes just that.
The toxins, pathogens, particles, substances we swallow (that with a healthy gut lining, are safely dealt with by an army of fiercely protective bacteria inside our digestive tract) can physically slip out into the blood stream.
This confuses our immune system and results in our body attacking itself (autoimmune disease).
This is a grave danger and how all disease starts in the gut.

So how do we nurture and nourish this amazing gut-brain relationship? Tune in next week to find out!
