19th Amendment: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”

The simple wording of the 19th Amendment doesn’t reflect the years of struggle to get it passed into law.
“Suffrage” means the right to vote in political elections, and this month American women celebrate the 100th anniversary of obtaining the right to vote.

The road to this victory was a long one, beginning in 1848, and women in Lenawee County were some of the early leaders. Michigan was one of the first states to ratify the amendment, doing so in 1919.

The Suffrage Flag contains a field of purple and a field of gold. It also has two rows of 18 stars to represent the 36 states necessary to ratify the amendment granting women the vote.

Many local women worked for the right to vote; we know that Lenawee County was a progressive center during the nineteenth century. A partial list of those involved shows county wide involvement:

Alice Angell, Adrian

Jennie Law Hardy, Tecumseh

Mrs. Harrington Place, Blissfield

Mrs. Charles Kirby, Hudson

Mrs. Alma Tate, Clinton

Mrs. Hattie Mead, Morenci

Isabel Larwil, Adrian

Sarah V. Wastell, Clinton

Flaude Cleveland, Addison

Edith Abbott, Cadmus

Ida Shepard Abbott, Cadmus

The amendment was passed by Congress and ratified by the required 36 states on August 26, 1920. By the fall of 1920 over 9,000 women in Lenawee County had registered to vote in the upcoming presidential election.

The Turn of the Key

by Ruth Ware, read by Imogen Church

In this gripping suspense novel, Rowan Caine takes on a job that sounds too good to be true, a  live-in nanny to three adorable little girls in the Scottish Highlands. Everything seemed perfect; the staggering salary, the completely computerized “smart” house, down to the always helpful groundskeeper. To top it off, the beautiful Highlands serve as a picturesque back drop. Who cares that she was not one hundred percent honest at her interview? This job was a dream, her dream and Rowan was not going to let go of it.

But behind the splendor lurks deception, secrets and murder. The reality of her dream job is anything but perfect. The computerized smart house malfunctions with disastrous consequences. Her employers are continuously gone for weeks on end, leaving her completely alone with the children. And what are the horrible, creepy noises keeping her awake at night?

This title was my introduction to the work of Ruth Ware, and since then, I have devoured all of her other novels. Ruth Ware is called the modern Agatha Christie and justifiably so. From the get-go, the author weaves a tight web of suspense and I literally felt pulled into the story until I was just yearning for release.
The story is written as a single letter from Rowan to her lawyer explaining the course of events to him. I found this way of writing extremely interesting, and to me, it brought a deeply personalized aspect to the story. At times, I wanted to interrupt and ask Rowan a question for clarification.

This was to a great extent due to the breathtaking performance by Imogen Church. She delivers a sensitive narration, at times her voice pleading for understanding, then stating events matter-of-factly.  And then, there were the aforementioned horrible creepy noises. Ms. Church re-enacts them so authentically that I found myself clutching a pillow and feeling goosebumps, all the while hoping fervently that there might be a logical explanation for everything after all.

I always admire how a good narrator enhances an already great story and turns it into an experience. Even though I was thoroughly creeped out, I was too compelled to actually skip a few tracks and join the story at a later point. Imogen Church picks up the author’s momentum and with her voice talents tightens the suspense to such an extent that I found myself yelling, “Oh, just tell me already!”

I heartily recommend this audio book to any listener who loves a fascinating and spellbinding suspense novel.

The Sauk Native American Trail (US-12):
Detroit to Chicago Today
on Facebook Live
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The three great Native American Trails in early Michigan history were the Grand River, the Territorial (Michigan Avenue) and the Sauk.  Eventually, these trails became US-16, US-12 and US-112 and later the three became I-96, I-94 and US-12, respectively.  (US-12 as a numbered highway was originally US-112).  The Sauk Trail became the most heavily traveled in Michigan (US-112, then US-12) because it was the most direct highway between Detroit and Chicago.  John S. Geisler, EdD, Professor Emeritus, Western Michigan University, will cover the history of the highway and what it looks like today. View a copy of the original survey of the road done in 1825.
