CFHL, UCCE Fresno Meets the Pandemic Challenge Using The Extender Model
When Fresno Unified School District moved to a distance learning model for the remainder of the 2020 school year, CFHL, UCCE Fresno County sprang into action – emailing 192 teachers and offering online interactive lessons. While students sheltered-in-place these lessons were ongoing reminders of the benefits of healthy eating and active living - even if it’s indoors!
- 110 elementary students were reached by 8 school teacher extenders from 4 elementary schools from April through June with direct nutrition education using Zoom. A total of 9 lessons from My Amazing Body, Good for Me and You, Happy Healthy Me and Power Play were completed. These lessons included a MyPlate overview, PowerPoint slides, and an indoor physical activity segment.
- 20 - 7th grade students tuned in for the UP4it curriculum - filling the need for students to maintain healthy habits with lessons on the importance of eating nutritious foods and staying physically active. A close collaboration between CFHL, UCCE Nutrition Educator Robert Tapia and two PE teachers, Ms. Felder and Ms. Yohannes, resulted in the successful adaptation of the UP4it workbook into a digital format that the teachers could access weekly – delivering one lesson each week in the month of May.
Karina Macias CFHL, UCCE Fresno County Program Manager reported that teachers felt supported by the program in a time of uncertainty. “Our lessons offer familiarity in a time of great change for students and families, and the physical activity indoors helps create focus and keeps students engaged with online learning.”
