Disposable City
What does the future hold for the City of Miami? Described by many as being "ground zero for sea level rise," Miami is particularly susceptible to not only the impacts of climate-induced extreme weather, rising seas, and an aging infrastructure, but also questions of social equity arise when considering such issues as climate gentrification.
In a work the New York Times calls "insightful and richly detailed," local author Mario Alejandro Ariza explores the tapestry of Miami culture while investigating present and future effects of climate change while recognizing the "magic city" will likely be underwater by the end of the century.
This book is newly released as of July, 14th, and discusses issues directly related to both sustainability as well as Earth Literacy and will likely be of interest to the EEI crowd. For more on Disposable City, please visit the book's website here.

Vote, Our Planet Depends On It!
With local elections coming up on August 18th and national elections right around the corner on November 3rd, we hope you are registered and planning on making your voice heard! With so many pressing issues related to social equity, sustainability, and the environment, it more important than ever that you get out and vote!
But, how to make an informed decision? Here are some resources we hope you may find helpful:
- The Earth Day Vote Earth website has general information on registering to vote, checking your registration status, and more.
- Earth Guardians Vote for Earth website also has links to register as well links for organizing, live stream broadcasts, information on issues, and more.
- Our friends at the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy (iCED) have created this hand Election Guide Factsheet.
- Voterfocus.com has a list of all candidates in the upcoming local elections, as well as campaign fiance info
Please be on the lookout for more on local and national candidates through the various media as we approach the election days.

Learn about solar energy and its benefits for your home, or small business! A new Miami-Dade Solar Co-Op is launching and there is an upcoming virtual information session August 11th at 6:00 PM. This will be a live, online presentation, so you will be able to ask questions during the session. Click here to register and for more information.

EEI is busy working with MDC's Center for Institutional and Organizational Learning (CIOL) planning our upcoming year of professional development offerings. We will be striving to provide learning opportunities related to Earth Literacy and sustainability, even if it is exploring virtual formats.

Virtual Water/Energy Conservation Lab for MDC Classes
EEI is collaborating with local non-profit Dream in Green to bring you another virtual water/energy conservation WE-LAB in the Fall term. These workshops allow you to learn about home recycling, water and energy conservation, and more directly from representatives from our local utilities. WE-Lab is always a great opportunity to learn how to be more sustainable at home, as well as being a great curriculum enhancement for GSELS or environmentally-themed classes. More info TBA.

Environmental Justice and Education
Environmental Justice is about the fair distribution of environmental hardships--who gets exposed to pollution, who has to live next to a toxic waste site, who does not have adequate access to water and sewage? Our friends at Dream In Green, in partnership with Venture Cafe and Go Green Ecobins are offering this important virtual town hall discussing the role of education in ensuring environmental justice in our community.
