What’s in a name? Dun Leary – Kingstown – Dún Laoghaire

A visual history through postcards celebrating the centenary of the town’s name change during the War of Independence.

In 1821 the name Dunleary or Dun Leary was changed to Kingstown in honour of George IV’s visit to this bustling and rapidly developing town. In 1920 it was officially given the name Dún Laoghaire, referring back to the original Irish name for Dunleary. It is asserted that the name came from an old fort (Dún) that belonged to a chieftain called Laoghaire. It was a deliberate political act during the War of Independence, an act of defiance against the old order in Ireland.

dlr Libraries: Open for business!

The following dlr Libraries have been back open since Monday 29 June:

Blackrock, Cabinteely, Dalkey, Deansgrange, dlr LexIcon, Dundrum and Stillorgan.

We're delighted to let you know that Shankill Library will be re-opening on Monday 20 July.

All our libraries are open for their normal staffed opening hours, except for Sunday opening in dlr LexIcon and My Open Library hours in Deansgrange Library.

During this time, we're looking at a gradual return to all our usual library services, bearing current public health guidance in mind at all times, and subject to review. This means we're currently offering:

  • Quick browsing service
  • Quick internet access
  • Contactless printing & photocopying
  • Self-service issue & return of library items
  • Contactless self-checkout of library items using the dlr Libraries App

We are still unable to offer study spaces and/or access to newspapers and magazines for the moment. However, we are continually reviewing the availability of these services, as we progress to the next Phase.

The national delivery service has resumed, which means that books and other library items are travelling between library authorities all across the country.

We know that you've been missing your book requests, so we expect the national reserves system to be switched on again around 17 July. Keep an eye on our social media for more info!

****Change of title for July!****
We had previously advised The Salt Path as the title for discussion in July, and some of you may have started this book. Due to delays in receiving copies, we have pushed The Salt Path read back to August and Mary Burnham, our facilitator, has chosen another title which is more readily available.

The July title is now Prayers for the Stolen by Jennifer Clement. We have 20 copies of this quick read available for collection from Level 4 in dlr LexIcon, for anyone who would like to borrow a copy from the library.  Just ask the staff there for a copy for the online book club.

Please email libraryculture@dlrcoco.ie if you wish to join our Online book club discussions.

Children's Art Competition winners

dlr Libraries advertised a children's art competition on 13 May 2020. Children from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown were asked to create a piece of art inspired by the title:

'Summertime is for.....'

We had a great response and were delighted to receive over 50 entries within the age categories of 5yrs and under, 6-8yrs and 9-12yrs.

The entries brought us joy, colour, inventiveness and creativity, which goes to show that even during the Covid-19 pandemic and time of quarantine during Ireland, our imaginations are always vibrant places to be!

As ever, winners for children's art competitions are extremely hard to pick. We engaged with a local artist to pick winning entries on our behalf. We would like to congratulate all the children that entered the competition and let them know we will be adding their artwork to an online exhibition soon for everyone to enjoy.
