'BACK TO THE ICE' TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT DAY

After the NSW Government announced the lifting of restrictions, NSWISA quickly made some adjustments to enable the scheduled July T&D Day to include on-ice sessions to provide our skaters with more access to ice and additional skills to return to the ice safely. With limited numbers, our IJS level skaters quickly jumped at the chance to secure more ice time and the opportunity to work with coaches Kylie Fennell and Adam Zalegowski.
The skaters showed a lot of enthusiasm on the ice and the coaches were impressed with their form. It was great to see the return of on-ice events and it was clear that many skaters had worked hard during the period in which rinks were closed. Many thanks to our volunteers, in particular Joanna Miller, for running the off-ice warm up, strength & flexibility component and for organising the day.

TESTS
Recognising the need to provide skaters with the opportunity to achieve their 2020 goals, NSWISA is working with Clubs to offer test sessions in normal figure sessions. These test sessions will begin on the 13th July at Penrith.
For skaters who had already booked sessions that were cancelled, skaters should nominate a new time to take the test and for skaters who hadn't booked any tests and now wish to do so, please book the via the NSWISA website. ALL SKATERS MUST PRE-BOOK FOR THEIR TESTS to ensure everything can be organised. Any skates who are not on the approved list for each session will not be allowed to test. The usual minimum numbers (6 tests) will be required in order for sessions to proceed.

The test sessions on offer next week are:
13th July - Penrith Ice Palace (3:15pm - 6:00pm)
14th July - Hunter Ice Skating Stadium (3:00pm - 5:00pm)
16th July - Macquarie Ice Rink (5:00pm - 7:15pm) *as per the original scheduled test session on the NSWISA calendar
17th July - Ice Zoo (4:00pm - 6:00pm)
18th July - Liverpool Catholic Club (7:30am - 9:00am)

Thank you to the officials who have mobilised quickly to ensure that these tests can take place. For skaters who will be testing at rinks other than their home rink, please take the time to familiarise yourself with the rink protocols and requirements resulting from COVID-19 procedures.
Tests will be conducted in the same way skaters would ususally practice their progarams in lessons so high-vis bands or vests will be required to be worn as per rink requirements. We ask all skaters who are on the ice in these sessions to please be courteous to those who are taking tests. We thank everyone in advance for their cooperation with this.
UPDATES FOR COVID-SAFE COMPETITION AND TRAINING
As NSW has been able to ease restrictions to allow return to sport, NSWISA has been working hard keeping up with latest updates from the NSW Government and the NSW Office of Sport. To enable a safe return to sport, NSWISA has adopted the 'Get in, skate, get out' mantra. NSWISA has provided Clubs and rinks with the below poster, so please ensure you take the advice as outlined.
NSWISA is busy planning for competitions to ensure that measures are put in place which align with current government expectations and current COVID-safe protocols.
NSWISA asks that all Members and Spectators who are attending competitions and training sessions, to please follow the advice of volunteers and rink staff. There will be plenty of signage at the rink to help you with movement around the venue. Please note that the requirements will vary from rink to rink as a result of venue sizes, access points and layouts so please be flexible and responsive as we all settle into the new requirements.
Please arrive at competitions with time to warm up and compete safely, however please don't plan to spend the entire day at the rink. Similarly to training, we will have a "get in, compete, get out" approach to competitions. Presentations will be held after every couple of divisions as results are signed off to both limit crowds at presentations and to enable people to leave the venue in a timely manner.
NSWISA asks that all Members and families respect the advice from the NSW government, NSWISA, volunteers and officials so that competition and training can continue without setbacks or increased restrictions.
NSW OFFICE OF SPORT ASSISTS GRASSROOTS SPORT
Through the NSW Office of Sport, the NSW Government has released a Community Sport Recovery Package to help support the sector get back on its feet. As part of that package, NSWISA has received funding and NSWISA Clubs will be able to access the Grassroots Sport Fund. This fund will provide a one-off grant of up to $1,000 to assist our Clubs to return to sport in this current environment. All Clubs have been briefed about this grant by NSWISA, and we will continue to work with the Clubs to provide them as much information required to utilise this support. NSWISA is grateful to the NSW Government and NSW Office of Sport for this support.
BOARD MATTERS
After the election of the NSWISA Board at the AGM, the new Board has met 3 times. The Board's key focus to date has been to get back to competition and examining the impact of COVID-19 across the different NSWISA portfolios. As a result, many policies have been updated to take these impacts into account. One policy that skaters should be aware of is the NSWISA001 - Entry to State Championships  which has been updated to reflect the impacts COVID-19 has had on competitions in NSW. COVID-19 documentation has been developed to assist Clubs with preparation for competitions. A focus of the Board has also been on the 2020 Budget and this will be an item of ongoing importance, even more than normal, due to the turbulent year 2020 has been. The Board is committed to managing a financially sustainable Association which provides opportunities for all Members to participate in the sport we all love and enable Members to achieve their goals.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The change in structure for NSWISA has allowed the Board to review the key areas of NSWISA work and redesign how we operate. Six key portfolios that the Board feel are imperative to our success as an organisation have been identified. These portfolios are Aussie Skate, Marcomms, Officials, Sport Development, Technology & Volunteers. A brief overview of some of the components contained in each of these areas is as follows:
  • Aussie Skate - Driving Participation, Competitions, Development, Promotion, Point Score, Community, Pathway to IJS
  • Marcomms - Member Communications, PR, Media Liaison, Social Media, Sponsorship, Programs, Grants
  • Officials - Recruitment, Training & Development, Paneling Competitions, Test Session Allocations
  • Sport Development - Training & Development, Skater Support, Innovation, Team NSW Culture
  • Technology - Website, CRM, IJS, Music Collection, Live Stream
  • Volunteers - Club Event, States, Administration, Documentation, Specialty Fields (eg. Legal, Financial Planning, Accounting, Graphic Design)

NSWISA are very lucky to have already had some hands put up to assist in some of these areas but there is plenty more work that needs to be done and there are some great opportunities for interested people to learn more about the sport and its administration. Participation in these areas allows individuals to gain valuable experience in key areas of interest and provides great opportunities to refine your skills, all while giving back to the sport and creating even more opportunities for participants.

The Board would love to hear from anyone who has an interest in any of the above areas, or in any areas which may not be listed above, but you think would be beneficial to NSWISA. We are excited to take this new step and look forward to working to further develop NSWISA for our Members.
