A little over one month ago, on July 1st, it was my distinct honor and privilege to be inaugurated as the 21st Mayor of Montclair. With my wife and family by my side, it was an added thrill that Governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy took the time to come to Montclair to administer the oath of office.
These are challenging and tumultuous times in our country. The worldwide Coronavirus pandemic presents an unprecedented, ongoing public health and economic crises that demands coordinated action at all levels of government.
Additionally, the scourge of racial injustice continues to plague our nation. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and far too many other minorities at the hands of police underscore the severity and pervasiveness of racism in our society.
In the face of these challenges, and others, Montclair has shown the spirit, character, and determination that our community is known for. I was proud to join thousands of Montclair residents who took to the streets in a peaceful manner to demand social justice and an end to police violence against minorities. The work to undo centuries of racism is far from over, but communities like Montclair shine as a beacon of hope and as an example of the progress that is possible when we work together.
As part of our continued response to the Coronavirus pandemic, in the coming weeks we will be announcing a Montclair Coronavirus Task Force to assist with recovery. This task force will be charged with working with local businesses, residents, and non-profit organizations to help Montclair get back on its feet. We will also be taking a close look at the whole-of-government response to the pandemic and identifying best practices so that Montclair will be better prepared for the next public health crises.
Effective government requires ongoing communication. It is my hope to use this newsletter as one tool to keep residents updated on township developments. You can also find updates and get in touch with me at SeanSpiller.com, and by following @SeanMSpiller on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
By working together, with a shared commitment to the ideals Montclair stands for, we will overcome our challenges and preserve the town we all love for generations to come.
