Beginning this month, I’ll be sending occasional short, themed newsletters to supplement my monthly newsletter, which will continue with its same format. The short newletters will include:

My high school English teacher, Marjorie Bruce, loved the New York Times Book Review. She maintained that good book reviews serve two purposes: introducing us to books we’ll want to read, and allowing us to explore books we may not read.

This terrific memoir reminded me of another memoir that, on the surface, seems miles distant geographically, culturally, and just about every other way: Tara Westover’s Education. The former is about a biracial young man raised black in pre- and post-Apartheid South Africa; the latter is about a young woman raised painfully, relentlessly white in Utah.
