iOS & iPadOS 14 Revealed, What's New?

Hi <<First Name>>,

If you haven't already heard, Apple made some big announcements at its annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) last week.

During the Keynote on June 22, Apple announced coming updates to iOS and iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, and macOS.

Now keep in mind, in iOS & iPadOS 14 Apple introduced system-wide performance enhancements and major updates. But for this issue, I'll just focus on the new feature highlights. Stay tuned to future editions as I cover iOS & iPadOS 14 in more detail. (Some big changes coming!)

What's new with iOS 14?

App Library on the Home Screen

iOS 14 adds a new App Library "simple view" for organizing all of your apps, and this new space lives at the end of your Home Screen pages.

Apps are automatically organized in the App Library, and you don’t have to keep all of the icons on your actual home screen view. Plus, there is a new list view features for sorting applications based on usage and more.

Redesigned Home Screen Widgets

Widgets have been totally redesigned to give you more information at a glance. They are accessible via the Today View, but can also be dragged out of Today View and onto the home screen.

Apps move out of the way automatically to make room for the widgets.  Choose from different sizes and arrange however you like.

Smart Stack is a set of widgets you can swipe through that uses on-device intelligence to surface the right widget at the right time based on factors like time, location, and activity.

Compact Call Notifications

When you receive a Phone, FaceTime, or third-party app call, it appears as a banner instead of taking over the entire screen, so you won’t lose track of what you’re doing.

Swipe up on the banner to dismiss it or swipe down to access extended phone features and tap to answer.

Picture in Picture

With Picture in Picture support, ‌iPhone‌ users can now watch TV shows and movies, engage in FaceTime video calls while navigating elsewhere on their device.

The implementation is similar to Picture in Picture on iPad. Video can be swiped to the side and the audio will keep playing while the video remains hidden.

Messages App

The Messages app has several new features in iOS 14; including:

  • Pinned conversation for up to nine conversations pinned to the top of your message list
  • Mentions that direct a message to an individual in a group conversation by typing the person’s name
  • Inline replies lets users reply directly to a specific message in a group conversation
  • Set group photo for your group conversation using a photo, Memoji, or emoji that is shared with all members of the group.

Translate

Translate is an all-new app for translating conversations, with support for 11 different languages at launch and an offline mode for private voice and text translation.

Supported languages include Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

When you place your iPhone in landscape orientation, a microphone button appears as a quick way to begin translating. The side-by-side user interface makes it easy for two people to have a conversation in different languages.

What's new with iPadOS?

iPadOS 14 inherits all the features mentioned above in iOS 14, but here are a few iPadOS specific features I'd like to share with you.

iPadOS Sidebar and Pull-Down Menus

The first new feature Apple mentioned for iPadOS 14 is an improvement for its own apps. Expect enhancements like sidebars and pull-down menus let you quickly and easily access more app functions from a single location, without switching views.

Scribble

With Scribble, you can use an ‌Apple Pencil‌ to write in any text field on the iPad, with the written text then converted to typed text.

The text-to-type functionality lets you use the ‌Apple Pencil‌ throughout the operating system without having to swap over to a keyboard when you need to compose an email, write a Calendar event, visit a URL, send an iMessage, or conduct a search. You can, for example, go to Safari and write in a web address, and it'll convert to the proper URL so you can get to the site.

If you make a mistake when you're writing something, you can just scribble it out with the ‌Apple Pencil‌ and it deletes, which is a handy feature. If you need to select regular or written text, you can just circle it.

Scribble is built into the Notes app too. Just tap on the toolbar and select the pen that has the little "A" on it. This tool will convert all your handwritten text in notes to typed text.

Data detectors now work with handwritten text to recognize phone numbers, dates, and addresses, and offer users the ability to take actions like tapping a written number to make a call, adding an event directly to Calendar, or showing a location in Maps.
