The Domaine Ponsot has operated a métayage arrangement with the Domaine de Chezeaux for more than 30 years. It has been their source for three of the domaine's most important wines, and arguably their best, they being the monumental Clos St Denis Vieilles Vignes, Griotte-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny Charmes.
Métayage is a convenient arrangement among Burgundian producers and French farmers more generally, that allows the owner of the land, in this case Domaine de Chezeaux, to have their land tended and their grapes made into wine by a much better domaine, in this case Ponsot, who then keeps a share of the final bottled wine as payment in kind. As a result the same wine appears under two different labels: Domaine de Chezeaux and Domaine Ponsot (Though there is the additional complication that the métayage went with Laurent when he left the family domaine with the 2016 vintage.)
There is lively argument as to whether the wines are identical or if one is better than the other, but the raw material, the farming, the winemaking, the élevage are all the same, at least in principle, so it is always interesting to see the degree to which the market differentiates the two by price. Chezeaux is invariably cheaper than the Ponsot. Often it is close to half the price.

This offer comes from our supplier's direct purchase from Ponsot. The current import TARIFFS ARE INCLUDED. ETA is September.
The price to have the wine delivered to a UK bonded warehouse is also listed. Marked * below.

The prices in this offer, are way below the current market. The Chambolle Charmes is not available elsewhere in the US for under $120 and Griotte prices usual start around $225-$250 with many merchants much higher.. Beyond that, Ponsot's own label also commands a 50%-100% premium above Chezeaux, so we think this is a huge opportunity for fans of Laurent Ponsot.
Domaine de Chezeaux - Elevé, vinifié et mise par Laurent Ponsot

Griotte Chambertin 2017 - $199 (30 bottles)  ($155 if delivered to UK Bond*)
93-96 points Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy: "Glowing fresh mid purple. Superb grace to the nose, magically juicy, then a firmer backbone behind. Some crunch here, only medium intensity, a wine to judge by its class more than its size. The fruit is ripe but not untidy, more in the fresh little red fruits register. Tasted: November 2018."
Griotte Chambertin 2016 - $219  (6 bottles)   ($185 if delivered to UK Bond*)
95-97 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "In Laurent’s time at Domaine Ponsot this could be a veritable hit or a slight miss. The 2016 looks like the former. It has a gorgeous purple black centre, then a marvellous richness of red and black fruit through the middle, a very valuable bite of acidity, and all sorts of detailed little red fruits dancing across the palate, offering amazing detail. Very promising!" (01/2019) Winery note: "Less vigorous than Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin is a rare wine, with a ruby hue, sensuality, breeding and elegance; a confiture of cherry flavours, red fruits, licorice and spices - a mineral note too. It is a wine with round tannins that suit perfectly the natural low acidity of the climat. Soft in the mouth, it is opulent and glossy - a wine of silk and lace."

Chambolle-Musigny, Charmes  2017 - $79 (36 bts)  ($59 if delivered to UK Bond*)
93 points John GIlman, View from the Cellar: As I noted last year, Laurent has retained his contract for the vineyards from Domaine des Chézeaux, so the Chambolle “Charmes” and the other wines made from the fermage agreement are much the same here as they were at Domaine Ponsot. The 2017 Charmes offers up a lovely and ripe bouquet of red plums, black cherries, beetroot, a touch of chocolate, a fien base of soil, gamebird and a topnote of mustard seed. On the palate the wine is deep, full and sappy at the core, with modest tannins, good, tangy acids and a very long, complex and quite plush finish. Good juice. (Drink between 2022-2050)
Chambolle-Musigny, Charmes  2016 - $89 (36 bts)  ($65 if delivered to UK Bond*)
90-93 points Allen Meadows, Burghound:  Here too there is a note of menthol along with evident wood, something that is highly unusual for a classic Ponsot wine. To be fair, neither is enough to overshadow the ripe nose of red berry fruit liqueur-like aromas that are cut with hints of plum and violet. The sleek, delicious and energetic flavors are at once muscular yet refined while offering excellent length on the relatively powerful and firmly structured finish. Good potential here. (Drink starting 2028)
