HAPPY 4TH OF JULY??

By:  Dennis L. Speigel, Founder & CEO - ITPS

This year, the 4th of July will be unlike any we have ever celebrated in the USA, and in the history of our industry.

This will be the first time in over 67 years that Disneyland and other major theme parks and family parks will not be open to celebrate Independence Day.  What a shame.  Theme park visitation is synonymous with July 4th celebrations.  Picnics, fireworks, parades, and huge family get-togethers have always been carried out at amusement parks, beaches, etc.

This year has presented a lot of challenges to our industry and our valued guests.  Not having some parks available to attend in 2020 is a first, and hopefully the last time we ever see an occurrence of this nature.  Being closed on the 4th of July by parks and attractions in the USA is sacrilegious.  It ruins many people’s traditional holiday experience.  I know I for one will not experience the typical 4th of July that I celebrated at amusement and theme parks for over 50 years.

It is not the end of the world as we say, but it is the end of a long time tradition for me and my family, as well as many others.

Next year will be, has to be better.  We can start getting back to normal (as we continue to say) celebrating our heritage and traditions in the places we love best – amusement parks, theme parks, waterparks, and attractions.  But for now, Happy 4th of July!  Carry the banner as high as one can, and don’t drag the flag.

3.  MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack: Defending the Galaxy for 20 Years and Counting

“You can choose from these three rides.”  “Let’s go with Men In Black,” I said. “I can rock a necktie.”  This was 10 years ago when I interviewed for a job at Universal Orlando Resort. I was given the choice of which attraction to work, and I chose MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack. Admittingly, I based my choice solely on what wardrobe I thought I would look best in. Little did I know that this would become one of the biggest life-changing moments for me…but more to come on that later.

The numbers aren’t there—total revenue for the entire four-year life of the company has only hit an estimated $10 million. Instead, those investors were buying into the hype.
