RMIF viewpoint on export of livestock by sea

The Red Meat Industry Forum (RMIF) supports the trade of livestock and transport by ship if it is ethically done and without any animal abuse.

Local legislation as well as the principles and guidelines outlined by the World Organisation for Animal Health, the OIE, must in the absence of South African guidelines govern the export of livestock from South Africa.

Red meat labelling: what consumers want

Food labels could be viewed as a source of potentially useful information to help consumers make good food choices.

These labels draw attention to desired product characteristics and help consumers to avoid less desirable food items, ingredients and nutrients. Food labels also help consumers to compare similar products to make it easier to select the product best suited to their needs.

Researchers control cattle microbiomes to reduce methane and greenhouse gases

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) researchers have learned to control the microbiome of cattle for the first time which could inhibit their methane production, and therefore reduce a major source of greenhouse gasses.

The animal microbiome is a scientifically unexplored area. It protects against germs, breaks down food to release energy, and produces vitamins and exerts great control over many aspects of animal and human physical systems. Microbes are introduced at birth and produce a unique microbiome that evolves over time.

Research on resistance to wireworm in sheep

Research on resistance to wireworm in sheep has been done by Dr Alan Fisher and Grootfontein on the Wauldby Dohne Merino flock since 2011, according to the Ruminant Veterinary Association of South Africa (RuVASA).

Data on faecal egg counts (FEC), Famacha© score (FAM) and body condition score (BCS) were collected annually on all lambs. FEC, FAM and BCS of all lambs were recorded from the middle of January onwards. FAM was recorded weekly and FEC and BCS every 14 days until the end of June when Haemonchus challenge had decreased.

Causes of beef carcass condemnations at abattoirs

The inspection of beef carcasses is carried out routinely in abattoirs to diagnose animal diseases and defects in slaughter stock that may result in carcasses being deemed unfit for human consumption. Carcass condemnations cause huge economic losses and are a mounting problem in the beef industry. The importance of the management of cattle slaughter is generally appreciated, but a better understanding of the main causes of carcass condemnations may help to improve slaughter management at local abattoirs.

The power of creatine

Currently, plant-based diets are being touted as the ultimate form of sustenance for athletes to enhance their performance and overall health.

It's important to recognise that well-orchestrated documentaries promoting such claims cannot reconfigure human physiology, no matter how appealing the marketing, how loud the shouting or how well-intended the wishful thinking.

What we’ve been overlooking in the great debate on livestock

We cannot expand the Earth boundaries. Our natural resources are finite. But every day there are more people on the planet, and how to feed them all remains a number one issue.

The livestock sector is often cited as being particularly burdensome on the environment. In addition to the methane gas livestock emits, animals require a lot of nutritious feed. This feed needs to be grown on agricultural land, using water, energy and nutrients. It can be argued that this is an indirect and resource-intensive way of feeding the world.

Lean beef does not adversely affect heart health or diabetes risk

Results from a new study show that risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes were similar when participants consumed a healthy US-style eating pattern with and without an additional 150g of lean beef.

The added beef replaced carbohydrates, primarily refined starches. All participants were considered at risk for type 2 diabetes and followed a healthy diet as outlined by the 2015 U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and separately a similar diet modified to have a larger portion of calories from lean beef in random order.

Price trends in the producer price of weaners and beef

During the week of 19 June, the average price (after auction commission) was R28,63/kg for weaners (200 – 250kg) and R30,46/kg before commission, which was 2,7% higher compared to the previous week, according to AMT.

The increase is caused among others by a higher demand of weaners at auctions during the week.

Compared to a month ago, the price increased in total by 3,6% and was 14,6% higher year-on-year - when producers were suffering under the impact of the food and mouth crisis.

Price trends in the producer price of lamb

The producer price of Class A2/A3 lamb was in total 2,2% lower during the week of 12 June compared to the previous week, according to AMT.

The decline in the price can mainly be contributed to higher carryover stocks due to a supply that exceeded demand in the market.

The price was 2,3% higher compared to a month ago and 30,4% higher year-on-year. For the near future, the average price of the A2/A3’s may move slightly sideward/upward.
