Awards & Honours in Our Community

Susan McCahan inducted as Fellow of the Canadian Engineering Education Association

Professor Susan McCahan is one of four U of T Engineering Professors to be inducted as Fellow of the Canadian Engineering Education Association (CEEA-ACEG). The designation of Fellow honours individuals who have demonstrated noteworthy service to engineering education, engineering leadership, or engineering design education through their work with CEEA-ACEG.

Susan McCahan is the Vice Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education and Vice Provost, Academic Programs at the University of Toronto. Her current research focuses on the engineering learning environment as a designed system.
Peter Serles among U of T Engineering Vanier Scholarship recipients

Peter Serles (MIE PhD candidate) studies under the supervision of Prof. Tobin Filleter. Serle’s research focuses on nano-3D printing and how it can be used to build structures, robots and machines on the nanoscale. This relatively new technology allows for a much higher degree of complexity than has previously been possible.

The Vanier scholarship funding will open up the opportunity for Peter to travel internationally to gain experience with new technologies and bring them back to Canada. As Eastern Canada does not yet have a nano-3D printer Serles will also be able to develop the expertise needed to support U of T Engineering’s acquisition of a nano-3D printer in the next few years.

Retirements and New Hires

On July 1 four MIE professors officially retired: Viliam Makis, Paul Milgram, Jan Spelt and Jim Wallace. We had hoped to have a big celebration for them, but with all gatherings on hold, that will wait until a future date. In the meantime we wish to extend a big virtual congratulations and thank you for all your contributions to the department.

We’re also pleased to welcome some new faces who started on July 1:  Elias Khalil joined us as an IE prof, with expertise in OR and machine learning; and Sinisa Colic as a new Teaching Stream prof, who will teach AI and machine learning courses
