We are all on a path in life. Somewhere between the present and where we ideally want to be, we experience life events that define and transform us.
These have the power to develop us into stronger, more able human beings or they can totally break us.
Take COVID-19 for example. We are all facing challenges.
Some of us have lost jobs and businesses, some of us have lost loved ones or watched them suffer through the virus and all of us have had our plans uprooted.
No matter how hard we have been hit by this moment in history, incredible potential exists to grow and shape our futures.
And it starts with recognizing moments of fear and breaking them down into their structural components.
Ask yourself:
1. What are the objective and subjective components of this fear? (i.e. facts vs feelings)
2. What do I know and what don't I know about this situation?
3. Is this event a tool or an obstacle?
These are my first steps in solving a dilemma, and I strongly encourage you to write these out on paper. It helps to get it out of your head and into words.
The next step would be to map the valences onto the 4 Quadrant System I describe in my book. If you are not graphically inclined, look at your notes and ask yourself: what is my one overarching goal in life (my meta-goal) and how can one small action I do with respect to this dilemma nudge me a little closer to that goal?
The beginning of your answer lies in that action.
Breaking down transformational moments can allow us to metabolize our fear in a healthy way and create an action plan for moving forward.
Try it out, and let me know how it works for you.
