Communicating, COVID-19, and Masks

If you have a hearing loss, are you required to wear a mask in public in Washington State? Yes, according to Governor Inslee's public health order. If you need help communicating, masks can be removed temporarily.

Which type of mask do you use--face shields, DIY masks with clear windows, or something else? To see all the mask options and complete a survey about your preferences, please click here. Read the results of the survey, updated periodically.

If you're frustrated by communicating when you and others are wearing face masks, you're not alone. Watch this webinar from HLAA for tips on wearing masks with your hearing aid or CI, staying relaxed and confident as you communicate, and getting help with your hearing aids during the pandemic.

Clear masks are also an option. If you're the sewing type, here's a DIY pattern. And ClearMask is one company that offers large, clear, half-face shields.

And thankfully, even better masks are on the way....

A new plastic "smart mask" connects to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. The mask converts speech to text or amplifies your voice. It's designed to be worn over a regular face mask.

The first see-through surgical mask should be available to caregivers in summer 2021. This mask was developed by Swiss scientists.

And a new completely clear mask, Leaf, includes HEPA filtration and UVC sterilization. The company's indiegogo is funded, and mask production has started. These $89 masks will ship in August 2020.

Get Rail Cars Into the (Communicaton) Loop

We're on track and almost at the station. Help us reach 200 comments by July 14!

Let the U.S. Access Board know that loops and speech-to-text message displays should be required as part of their new transportation access rules. Without this vital communications access, people with hearing loss miss announcements, directions, information, and even safety information.

For more information on the proposed rules, click here.

Share Your Story and Celebrate the ADA

You could be part of Washington State's official ADA celebration.

On July 27, 2020 from 11 am to 1 pm, TV Washington will air a 2-hour program celebrating the 30th anniversary of the ADA. They're looking for one-to-two-minute videos from people like YOU telling their stories. Videos will be included in the program. Click here for instructions on how to make and submit your video.

Anyone can tune in from home to watch via TV or on your laptop, tablet, or phone. Be sure to like the event website on Facebook for details, or check the website for more details.

Stay Home, Stay Connected

Until we can attend in-person events again, here are some ways to be entertained and stay involved at home—captioned.

New
Fun, informative content curated for seniors is now featured on The Seattle Channel. Called AgeWise TV, the series includes gentle yoga instruction, a documentary on U.S. veterans, and more. CAPTIONED. Tune in online here, or check the broadcast schedule to watch on TV.

Seattle Theatre Group (STG) offers many interesting videos, including classes and the "Beyond the Curtain" series of artist interviews, Most are captioned.

Senior Planet offers daily classes, including technology, exercise like daily morning stretching, financial advice, book clubs, setting up a gmail account, navigating Zoom, and much more. Their YouTube Channel has automated captions.

Ongoing
Theatre Development Fund shares new-ish arts events and programming such as Broadway plays that you can watch from home. They update their page daily, and videos are usually captioned.

AgeWise King County hosts online (virtual) events to help keep seniors connected, including civic coffee hours and a new series, Close to Home: Stories of Health, Tech, and Resilience. Tune in every Thursday morning at 10:30 am. If you miss these events live, you can watch the video later.

Watch first-run independent movies at home. Ark Lodge Cinemas, Seattle International Film Festival, the Grand Tacoma, the Grand Illusion, the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon, and other theatres across the country are bringing fantastic films directly to you. You don’t need Netflix or Amazon Prime—simply pay a small rental fee, usually about $12, to stream it directly to your TV, laptop, or tablet. Most of these, including all foreign films, are captioned.

Note: Town Hall is on summer break July 3-26. Due to budget concerns, all their online events will be $5. Their archived programs, usually captioned, are available to stream from home.

Costco's Kirkland Signature Hearing Aids and Telecoils

Considering a hearing aid purchase at Costco? Thanks to your advocacy, the newest Kirkland Signature KS9 hearing aid is available to buy with a telecoil. Remember, a telecoil means you can connect to hearing loops in public venues around the world.

Be sure to request a telecoil at the time of purchase. (Bluetooth is also included in these hearing aids.)

Read more about the KS9s from Hearing Tracker. And watch Dr. Cliff Olson's video on buying hearing aids from Costco.

Note: HLAA-WA does not endorse any product we discuss, nor does exclusion suggest disapproval. We believe each person can review and select products based on their unique circumstances and needs. We support the full spectrum of technology access.
