A few things that have caught my eye...

I'm so grateful that the world continues to present interesting stuff to engage my brain even during a pandemic. I'm sharing a couple of them in this newsletter AND, even better, you'll find a link to a list of September New Releases that you can put on hold right now!

It's a little hard to think ahead to September, but I love having new books to look forward to. And, in the meantime if you'd like to try out the recipe below and share some with your favorite librarians, I'd look forward to that as well!

A Delightful Diversion

A legend’s final work, revealed

Until his final days, Milton Glaser, the 91-year-old graphic designer behind the iconic “I ♥ NY” logo, was still thinking about how his work could help his city.
He had been working on a new design inspired by the pandemic: a graphical treatment of the word “Together” that he hoped to distribute to public school students across the city and, eventually, the country. In one of his last interviews before his death last week, Glaser discussed the project and how he wanted it to evoke “the idea that we have something in common.”
Pandemic Dreams
(Boston Globe)

"The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from “Ghostbusters” tore through Boston last night — without a mask. A masked Bill Murray tackled him outside Fenway Park.

… Might’ve dreamt that one.

Pandemic dreams are bizarre, vivid, have some common themes, and are so widely experienced that Deirdre Leigh Barrett, dream researcher at Harvard Medical School, just wrote a book about the phenomenon."

"One reason we’re dreaming weirdly? We’re getting more shut-eye in quarantine, which means more REM cycles, says Barrett, an assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School."

Read more about the pandemic dreams that Barrett collected for this book and you can still contribute your own COVID-19 dream to Barrett's survey!

Curbside Pickup Pick-Me-Up

"It truly is my favorite time of the week when my two children open their book bags and run up to their rooms to read! No screens, no murmurings of boredom (as I return to another Zoom meeting) and everyone is happy."
whole lemon meringue pie bars

I have been in love with Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen for years. Her recipes are great, but I was drawn in by her writing. She's funny, a bit irreverent, and very, very honest about her own quirks and when she is no-holds-barred taking shortcuts.

I came across this picture of her Whole Lemon Meringue Pie Bars in a newsletter about something else entirely. I jumped ship over to Smitten Kitchen and never returned.

Here's how she introduces the recipe - I can relate to "just so many eggs" being a reason not to make something. Of course, the difference is that she figures out a way to make it more efficient, and I just read about how she did it!

"I’ve apparently been wanting to make lemon meringue pie bars for at least eight years, as per my decade-plus log of everything I want to cook. Three different times I’ve tried to draft a recipe but I always got stuck on how much was involved, both in three separate cooking processes and eggs, just so many eggs. Whole eggs in the lemon portion, egg whites for the topping… it just felt like a lot, if not a dealbreaker, enough reason for me to pause on the idea until I had a more efficient way to approach it."
