Look with love, O merciful Father, on the created works of your hand, and grant the camps of the angels to be guardians of our feeble persons.

Mesrob Mashdots, Oshagan

Still Mightier Than the Sword

It is a rare thing when a national culture is revolutionized by a small group of scholars. But that is exactly what happened in 5th-century Armenia, through the efforts of the Holy Translators. The leaders of the movement—Catholicos Sahag Partev and Mesrob Mashdots—truly gambled when they imagined creating an Armenian version of the Bible.

But their risk paid off. The unique Armenian alphabet they devised for the Bible was quickly deployed to translate great works of theology, philosophy, and history. As a result, literate Armenians were able to connect, as never before, with the great minds of the past: to absorb the wisdom of other cultures, and the lessons of other times.

Far from narrowing the worldview of Armenians, the Holy Translators broadened it, transforming it into a heritage which could—and would—defy the sword of invaders, endure calamity and dispersion, while aspiring to the highest forms of the arts and humanities.

That is the spirit the Translators laid down some 16 centuries ago. And it is a spirit we celebrate today (July 2), on the feast day dedicated to St. Sahag and St. Mesrob: a spirit born from a love of Christ, and expressed in treasures of faith, culture, and language that Armenian Christians can still pass on to their children and grandchildren.

Blessings on Independence Day

On behalf of our Primate Bishop Daniel Findikyan and the entire Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, we extend to you our warm good wishes on Independence Day.

For well over a century now, Armenians have been blessed to merge our way of life with the bounty and liberty of this great nation of America. On these shores our people found a refuge from persecution, but also a land that would sustain and strengthen us as we sought to honor our heritage, and worship our Lord.

The astonishing developments of this year have tested the resilience of that society, and the mettle of its people. These things should not, however, negate the powerful meaning America has held for its Armenian citizens. For successive generations of our people, America is the only home we have ever known. For the people of our ancestral homeland, America is an aspiration to guide them in the building of their own society, based in part on ideas first articulated in the Declaration of Independence.

In past times of tension, conflict, or uncertainty, we have prayed with grateful hearts that this land would show its characteristic resilience, born of its ability to overcome adversity and reform its inequities.

This Independence Day we renew those prayers, asking God to bless this land and her people, so that she may never cease to be seen as a sign of hope in the world, and a nurturing friend to our homeland.

Youth ministry Virtual Camp

Virtual Camp Registration—Now Live!

In this unusual summer season, the Eastern Diocese will implement a joint “virtual” program for Hye Camp and St. Vartan Camp that includes learning and fellowship opportunities to reach all ages. The online offerings will replace the Diocese’s traditional camp season, regrettably cancelled in the wake of health concerns from the pandemic.

The Virtual Camp week will run from Sunday, July 26 to Saturday, August 1. There is no cost to register for this program. Click on the following links to view a
flyer for Virtual Camp, as well as a sample schedule of activities.

Even though campers, CITs, and Staff will not be able to gather at their beloved Ararat Center or Camp Hickory for camp this summer, the virtual program will offer daily opportunities for youth to gather, pray, learn, and have fun.

To register, click here—and please fill out one registration form per participant.

For details, and to ask questions regarding Virtual Camp, contact Jennifer Morris and Kathryn Ashbahian at
diocesanyouthministries@gmail.com.

Please register your 2020 membership.

Many parishioners have told us that they would appreciate reminders about membership dues. So, this is our first reminder of the year!  Please take a look at your checkbook or other records.  If you have not yet submitted your membership dues for 2020, now is a great time to send in your 2020 Soorp Haroutiun membership dues.  Annual membership dues are $125 per person.
For your convenience, you will find a membership application on the table in the Narthex, which can be dropped off at the Church office.  Also, we are accepting your donations by credit card.

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

On behalf of Soorp Harouitun Armenian Church, we are writing to let you know the repairs to the church dome have started.  Our church has begun this necessary work because of water leaks.

Currently services are being held in the Khatchadourian-Tchobanian Cultural Hall.
The estimated cost of the repairs is $60,000. Donations to help with cost of the repairs will be deeply appreciated. We are looking forward to the completion of the construction with your generous help.
On behalf Soorp Haroutiun Armenian, we would like to thank you in advance for your support. Donations can be mailed to the church at 9274 Winter Garden Vineland Road, Orlando, FL 32836 or dropped off at the church.
