The Tulsa World's Haisten continues his analysis of developments around Oklahoma State FB HC Gundy, looks at how Pokes AD Holder came out, "At the end of Holder’s Zoom conference with reporters on Friday, my first thought was that this session had been his most significant public power play in several years. Maybe ever. [...] the same Holder who seemed so vulnerable in 2017 — when Chad Weiberg was hired and positioned as OSU’s next athletic director — now seems re-established as the university’s Most Powerful Person. [...] For a couple of years, there was a great deal of speculation on Holder’s retirement. It’s been a while since I’ve heard any such talk." (link)
"I’ve heard ‘em all. Everyone is just floating ideas out there. What is practical? What is factual? They tease out every scenario. I don’t think anything is off the table." That's Texas AD Del Conte to the Austin American-Statesman's Bohls. As for Oklahoma AD Castiglione on a spring season, "It’s absolutely feasible, doable, possible. Absolutely. It definitely can happen. The bottom-line question is if someone was asked would you rather have spring football or no football, then you find out if they like the idea." More from Del Conte, this time on FB attendance, "If everything stays the way it is, I think every single season-ticket holder will have a seat in the stadium. And we’ll take care of the students, but we have to have a social-distance plan." (link)
The Richmond Times-Dispatch's Teel does some math on what COVID-19 testing could cost FB programs, "Some Power Five officials have suggested 2-3 tests per week during the season, which on the low end would cost $21,600 per week. Multiply that by the regular season’s 13 weeks and you get $280,800 — for football only. Ratchet up testing to three times a week, and the tab becomes $421,200 — again, for one sport." Teel also talks to Wake Forest Senior Assoc. AD/Athletics Healthcare Administrator Grant, writes, "Grant confirmed what I’ve long suspected: The ACC advisory group is examining whether league teams should play non-conference opponents that don’t meet the ACC’s protocol." More. (link)
The New York Post's Kussoy & Braziller get feedback from FB coaches on challenges around a fall season. An unnamed P5 coach, "You are going to have 100-plus people in the locker room in close proximity. There is no way around that. If they are saying you can’t do that, I don’t see how we can operate when we are going to be on planes and buses with large groups of people and in hotels with other people. There is no way you are going to isolate 100 players, let alone the staff and coaches, and then say, ‘We’ll get together on Saturday for a game.’ In college football, they really don’t have a solution yet." Another, this one a "longtime DI coach," "All it takes is a couple of guys going to a bar or a restaurant or a party, catching it and you’re locked down for two weeks. It’s as fragile as that." Former Washington/Colorado/UCLA HC Neuheisel: "Kids are gonna be kids. They’re gonna figure out a way to break protocol and see their girlfriends, to go to a party, to be young. They’re going to look for things to do. You have to factor that in." (link)
NJIT AD Kaplan points to Leadershift: The 11 Essential Changes Every Leader Must Embrace by John Maxwell as a highly recommended read. Key insight: "It's not about being perfect, it's about being authentic. It's about how to work and grow, not only yourself but those around you. You must listen, the intake you receive will allow you to make meaning full change." (link)

Data from the mask-wearing Twitter campaign started by UNLV AD Reed-Francois: "More than 6.2 million Twitter handles had engaged with the hashtag through Friday [...] Notable accounts to promote the hashtag include the Raiders (1.6 million followers), North Carolina’s men’s basketball program (963,000 followers), Texas Christian’s football program (180,000 followers) and Virginia Tech’s football program (180,000 followers)." Reed-Francois says her son Jackson thought of the idea, "I can’t say I forecasted this where Roy Williams or other coaches have tweeted this out, but I’m very grateful. [...] Quite simply, we’re competitors on the field or on the court or in the water, but we’re all educators who want to provide for our student-athletes." (link)
Kansas City AD Martin pens for Medium: "What to the Black Student-Athlete is the Fourth of July?" Martin encourages black student-athletes to consider several things: 1) Clarity of what you want to be changed and improved - "Removing oppressive symbols is a start, but does not alter the day-to-day reality of role strain, time commitments, and the proliferation of false academic ineptness that oftentimes plague Black student-athletes at colleges and universities in our nation. Perhaps, request dedicated to authentic campus engagement is timely. Whereby Black student-athletes are able to maximize their roles as students and not regulated as mere performers in their respective sports. This truly has implications on campus satisfaction and post-collegiate purpose and identity refinement."; 2) Identify barriers and challenges in the quest for change; 3) Measure your conviction; and, 4) What is your game plan? Idaho became the 12th state on California's list of states banned by California Assembly Bill 1887, which prohibits universities and other public entities from using taxpayer dollars to travel to place with laws considered discriminatory. Despite that, San Diego State, Fresno State and San Jose State indicate they will continue traveling to Mountain West peer Boise State for athletic events, using the loophole of "private funds" to pay for the trips. The 2021 NCAA MBB Tourney opening weekend is scheduled for Boise State and a group of professional and collegiate athletes have sent separate letters to the NCAA asking it to remove ExtraMile Arena as a host site.  (link)
VenuesNow's Muret reports ANC "has seen greater interest in its portable products as professional and college football teams develop tailgate zones outside of stadiums that could sit half-empty this fall." Portable video screens in common spaces, such as concourses, along with at field level, could provide schools & rights holders additional inventory to generate revenue from sponsors/advertisers. ANC CEO Linardos says his firm is also working on solutions for the NBA bubble in Orlando & strategizing around the longer-term impact of reduced attendance. (link)
Here is a look at the NFL's rules for how each team should handle exposure to a COVID-19 positive individual. Asymptomatic positive testers must clear two negative tests at least five days after initial positive test, while symptomatic positive testers must wait at least 10 days since the first symptoms appeared before then clearing 72 hours symptom free. The Washington Post notes that housekeepers and custodians are hesitant about campuses reopening, asking for more protection from the schools. The housekeeping staff at Maryland, for instance, are demanding coronavirus tests provided by the school, as well as temperature checks and screening protocols, N95 or KN95 masks, goggles, face shields, gowns, booties and extra cleaning agents. Housekeeper Lyons: "We are the front-line staff on the campus. We are the ones who are doing the most work, and we get the lowest pay. I’m not coming there for $20 to kill myself." (link)
Following YouTube TV and FuboTV’s price increases, the WSJ’s FitzGerald examines the expanding prices and offerings of online TV providers. While prices have increased steadily, they are still less than the average $100 per month for a traditional TV package. However, as prices increase, subscribers are departing, as AT&T TV Now started losing customers in late 2018 and Sling TV had its first net customer loss in Q1. MoffettNathanson’s Moffett: “The live-TV ecosystem no longer makes sense except for live sports. It should help stabilize things a bit to have sports coming back, but we’re in a period of high unemployment and tremendous socioeconomic pressure. That tends to make customers look for places to save money.” (link)
