Dear All,
Our lectures have been well received online and we appreciate your
responses to our questions about your preferred times for Zoom sessions. We have not come up with an answer that suits everyone, so we will continue to plan each event on an individual basis.

A big 'thank you!' to all those who have also responded to our request for feedback on the technical aspects of Prof Maria Chester's Virtual Tour. Most people didn't have any issues; of those who did, the most common difficulties concerned awareness of, or access to, additional materials relating to the event. Where additional material is provided, you will see a link in both your Eventbrite confirmation and your ticket saying View Online Content. If you click on this link, you will be able to access any additional materials.

A couple of people were not able to join the event by clicking on the link and had to cut and paste it into their browser. This may relate to your browser settings: you can check this by trying it with a different browser.

When everyone was unmuted at the end of the tour, two people's microphones didn't function. If that happens to you, please send a Chat message and the host will try to unmute you individually.

Please keep us informed of any issues going forward and we will do our best to fix them.

BEA PROGRAMME
The following online lectures and courses for July are available for booking either as single sessions, or full courses on Eventbrite:

  • 7th & 9th July: Continuing our BEA events inspired by the Glasgow Boys and Girls exhibition (hopefully to open in the autumn at The Granary, Berwick), Prof Maria Chester continues her lectures on the Glasgow Boys & Girls (GB&G). The lectures can be booked individually at £4 per session.
  • 8th and 16th July: Our Film Studies continue for two more sessions, 'In the Eye of the Storm: The Films of Kathryn Bigelow' at 2pm on Wednesday 8th July and 'Love and Anarchy: The Films of Lina Wertmüller' at 2pm on Thursday 16th July. There is an easily accessible film to watch for each lecture, and sessions are £4 per lecture or free to BFS members.
  • 11 July: In this final session of 'Summer Astronomy' with Dr Adrian Jannetta, you’ll be able to imagine your place in the universe and gain an appreciation of how much we’ve learned in the last 100 years – and of how many mysteries still remain.
  • 20th July: Artist Gill Walton has pre-recorded a still life workshop inspired by GB&G paintings, in particular Guthrie's 'A Hind's Daughter'. 'The Glasgow Boys & Girls - Pattern, Texture and Brushwork' is a series of demonstration videos exploring the revolutionary techniques of brushwork found in the work of the GB&G. You can follow the sessions at your own pace and you can also attend an optional live Zoom event on 20th July with Gill and Prof Maria Chester to discuss your work and ask any questions. All this for just £10! The links to all of the sessions will be sent to you when you sign up for the workshop.
  • 21st & 23rd July: We have arranged a special joint event about the New York School and the music of Morton Feldman with Prof Maria Chester and Prof Mike Worboys. 'American Sublime: Art & Music in Post-War New York' is to be held on July 21st (Maria) and 23rd (Mike) at 4pm. The cost is £4 per session or £6 for both lectures.
  • 28th July to 27th August: Over 5 weeks, we will begin the study of 'Andean Civilisations' in 10 sessions with Prof Maria Chester at 4pm. There is no need to have attended previous courses on Mesoamerican Civilisations with Maria to understand and enjoy this course. Individual sessions are £4 or £30 for the course.
Please book on Eventbrite or by going to our website www.berwickea.co.uk

We're keen to hear from any new lecturers who are comfortable working online with Zoom. We would welcome suggestions for sessions on any topic and we'd particularly like to include more history and literature in our autumn/winter programme 2020-2021. Please do get in touch at berwickea@gmail.com if you are interested.

We are sorry to announce that Martin Laidler will be standing down as Science Programmer for BEA at the end of August. We all thank him for his considerable contribution to BEA's work in many areas. Martin, you will be missed! This means we will be looking for someone to help develop our science programme in the future. If you would like to take on this role, please email us at berwickea@gmail.com .

Very Best Wishes
Andrea Butler
