Ben Lewin, internationally renowned Australian film director, considers himself a ‘forty year overnight success.’ Join us for an evening packed with his witty insights as he talks to local film critic Jan Epstein about his recent work The Catcher Was A Spy and beyond. With his plethora of experience, most notably his feature film, The Dunera Boys, Lewin will consider the creative complexities involved in successfully bringing a book from page to screen, followed by a Q&A session.

The Catcher Was a Spy is currently available on Netflix and iTunes, but knowledge of the film is not required to enjoy this event.

Moe Berg, the central character in The Catcher Was a Spy, is the only major-league baseball player whose baseball card is on display at the headquarters of the CIA. A spy, a big-league catcher or an enigma? Find out who Moe Berg really was and why Ben Lewin decided to make this film, in this convivial special event.

Ben Lewin's career has encompassed award-winning documentaries, feature films, TV movies, mini-series and episodic programs. His films include The Sessions, Georgia, The Dunera Boys, and many others, while his TV work includes Sea Change, Ally McBeal and Rafferty's Rules. In 2017, Lewin directed The Catcher Was a Spy, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018 and was released to critical acclaim the same year.

Jan Epstein has been writing and broadcasting about film since 1988. She reported from the Cannes Film Festival for the ABC from 1991 to 2006, and has contributed to many magazines and newspapers including Cinema Papers and The Australian Jewish News. She has run film courses at the Jewish Museum of Australia, and she was a Jury Member at the 2016 AICE Israeli Film Festival.

For the second time this year, Melburnians are finding themselves in a lockdown. Our thoughts are for the safety and general well-being of the entire community.
