Managing the menopause

Warmer weather during the summer months can sometimes mean that women going through the menopause find things too hot to handle! The changes that happen to us during menopause are normal and natural. This does not mean, however, that they’re easy.

Hot flushes, vaginal dryness, aches and pains, and signs of ageing can be difficult to adjust to and live alongside. Women seeking help around perimenopause or menopause are often looking for more natural options than hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Sometimes, a strong family history of cancer means that HRT is not an option and an alternative relief of symptoms must be found.

During this time of hormonal change, a woman's body begins to slow its production of oestrogen. This change in hormone levels can cause irregular periods, hot flushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Some women also experience aches and pains, mood swings, loss of libido, anxiety, and insomnia.

To relieve these symptoms, there are many natural options available. Many of these treatments such as working with a herbalist or a homoeopath, tend to take a more holistic approach and can be highly effective at reducing or eliminating many of the distressing symptoms. Whichever option you choose to manage your symptoms, it is important to consult with an experienced health professional as many over the counter supplements are not suitable if you are already on HRT or other medication. By working with an experienced and registered health professional, you also have the reassurance of knowing that issues such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, both of which are influenced by oestrogen, are taken into consideration in your treatment plan.

But this time can also be a period of emotional change too, when many women reconsider their roles, their relationships, and their lives. As Brene Brown says:

“People may call what happens at mid-life a ‘crisis’, but it’s not. It’s an unravelling, a time when you feel the desperate pull to live the life you want to live, not the one you’re ‘supposed’ to live, to let go of who you think you’re supposed to be and embrace who you are.”

Much of my work includes working with women who want to put themselves back in charge of their lives. These women will often have spent years dedicating themselves to their family and work and haven’t had the luxury of time to consider how they want to be living life. They get to their forties or fifties and may feel frustrated, bored, lonely or without any sense of contentment or purpose, despite nothing being inherently ‘wrong’ with their life.

Confidence can begin to slip when signs of ageing appear or when energy or motivation decline. These women arrive at my clinic, frustrated with their recent weight gain, their constant irritability, or their complete loss of libido. And rather than take the antidepressants offered, they know it’s time to take back their power and get back in the driving seat of life. If this sounds familiar to you, get in touch to find out about my Menopause Matters programme and get your Mojo back before it’s too late.

The important message in this newsletter is to seek out help for your symptoms. The menopause is no doubt, a time of major change for any woman and like all change, can be a little uncomfortable at times! However, by managing your symptoms well and considering your health into the future, it is possible to move gently from your ‘tropical moments’ to more balmy days ahead!

"Having just completed one of Ashleigh’s Menopause Matters programmes, I’m thrilled with the results. Even though we were working online, the programme really worked well. I’ve seen huge improvements in my energy levels and my sleep, so my mood is so much better. But more than that, I’ve stopped feeling sorry for myself and have started doing things that make me feel better and happier. Ashleigh’s ‘Kindness and Kickass’ approach meant I felt supported and held accountable and I’m feeling so much more confident in myself already."

I’m currently continuing to work with clients online during this time as my office is based in my home. This is likely to change in the coming weeks as restrictions ease and I assess the infection rate numbers over the coming weeks. I’ll let everyone know once I return to in-person appointments.

I am using WhatsApp video call, Skype and Zoom and it’s easy for you as a client – all you need is a smart phone.

Appointments are available three days per week, and I am always unavailable on Thursdays and at weekends.

Get in touch on 087 746 5882 to schedule your appointment.
