The NCAA plans to take the Alston case to the Supreme Court per USA Today’s Berkowitz, who reports “the NCAA discloses decision about taking Alston case to Supreme Court while asking 9th Circuit to stay a district-court injunction that would prohibit the NCAA from having association-wide limits on the benefits athletes can receive that are related to education. Absent the stay, according to the NCAA, the injunction would take effect soon after the 9th Circuit mandates that the district-court ruling and injunction go into effect.” (link)
Multiple Ivy League coaches “expect Wednesday's announcement to be that the league is moving all fall sports, including football, to spring 2021,” per The Athletic’s Feldman and Auerbach, who add that “athletic administrators throughout Division I...expect a cascading effect following the Ivy League’s decision, adding that it essentially will give other FCS leagues -- such as the Patriot League, to start -- cover to make similar decisions.” One Power 5 administrator explains: “My suspicion is that the majority of presidents in the FBS are uncomfortable with the notion of playing football this fall but for various reasons don’t want to be the first to step out and say that. So, more than anything else, that decision provides the cover they need. I expect it’ll be a big domino.” Patriot League Commish Heppel: “If we were to reopen only for student-athletes, that is inconsistent with our mission. … Treating the student athletes as one piece of that puzzle is consistent with our mission and the importance of athletics for long-term sustainability.” (link)
With Harvard, Yale and Princeton announcing respective medium-density plans for their respective campuses this fall, Forbes’ Weaver observes that, as was the case in the spring, the Ivy League’s decisions could once again prove to be a foretoken of what is to come for the fall sports season. “College sports fans should pay very close attention to the dynamics at play. It seems like a long time ago when March Madness was cancelled, but two things happened in close succession that shut down the postseason tournament: The Ivy League elected not to play their conference tournament, and Duke announced they would not participate in the ACC Tournament. The President at Duke, Vincent Price, is a former Provost at the University of Pennsylvania. Will history repeat itself?” (link)
Athlon’s Haley reports that while the Ivy League will likely postpone fall sports to the spring, “other FCS conferences continue to move forward with the hope they can start the season (shortened schedule) and see where it goes. It can all change, but that's the sense at this moment.” (link)
Fordham has canceled its September 12 FB matchup at Hawaii due to the Patriot League’s travel policy. The Rams will announce later whether they will postpone the season until the spring. (link)
College Football Talk’s Fischer reports the NCAA is set to expand the MBB Selection Committee to 12 and change how members are picked, “including possibly more Power 5 reps in the group.” (link); Fischer also says that NCAA officials have had preliminary discussions about starting the MBB season earlier and incorporating a winter break. “Growing number of campuses pausing in November is prompting a more serious examination of changing the calendar in hoops as well.” (link)
The Pac-12 has approved an FY21 budget which includes a 9% reduction in expenses, including extended salary cuts for Commish Scott and other executives, and tapping into the league’s emergency reserves. Scott: “We were asked by our schools to look at what they were doing and adopt a similar policy. The CFOs came up with the methodology.” Salary reductions take effect immediately and will remain in place for the next 12 months. Employees making six figures received pay reductions ranging from 5-10%. Scott, who makes $5.3M, has indicated he will take a pay cut of 12%. Meanwhile, The Oregonian’s Canzano cites a “high-level conference administrator” saying of Scott: “There’s serious talk amongst the Pac-12 CEO Group to end his contract ahead of the expiration date to have a fighting chance to save the [Pac-12] Networks.” (link, link)
Stadium's Goodman & McMurphy concluded their subjective AD rankings based on career FB & MBB HC hiring results. Oklahoma's Castiglione takes the top overall spot, followed by Ohio State's Smith, Wisconsin's Alvarez, UCF's White & Notre Dame's Swarbrick. Each league, plus a number non-Power 5 leaders received grades. Of note, "The grades do not take into consideration any fundraising or building of facilities by the athletic directors." (link - overall, link - ACC, link - Big 12, link - Big Ten, link - Pac-12, link - SEC, link non-P5)

Penn State-to-Iowa State MBB student-athlete Bolton today revealed his decision to leave Happy Valley was due to racially insensitive comments made by HC Chambers. In addition, Bolton contends that after raising the issue with administrators and confronting Chambers, the coach never apologized and Bolton was later subjected to “subtle repercussions.” (link); Nittany Lions AD Barbour has subsequently released a statement indicating that Chambers “deeply regrets the words he chose” and is “committed to educating himself and is actively working to learn and grow.” Barbour also outlined steps the athletic department will take to foster a more inclusive environment, including conducting an annual climate survey, establishing a response team, providing educational opportunities and contributing to Prez Barron’s Commission on Racism, Bias and Community Safety. (link)
Utah State has suspended a FB student-athlete for making insensitive racial remarks. AD Hartwell and HC Anderson in a joint statement: “We have been made aware of inappropriate racial comments made by a current student-athlete on our football team. This will not be tolerated and we have suspended the individual immediately and pending an investigation will take appropriate action.” (link)
The Patriot League has formed the Anti-Racism Commission which will “examine areas in which systemic racism is perpetuated and seek actionable solutions for long-term sustainable change within the Patriot League.” The commission will include current and former student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Commish Heppel: “The voices and experiences of our current and former student-athletes, coaches and administrators, as brought together by the League, are powerful. The work of the Commission will intersect with existing and planned institutional initiatives and resources in order to maximize the value of the collective whole toward ensuring policies, operations and structure are absent of systemic racism.” (link)
The NCAA has confirmed to Missouri that the Tigers’ baseball and softball teams will be eligible for postseason play in 2021 after serving a one-year ban. (link)
Kentucky is reportedly planning on having its sports venues open for fans at 50% capacity this season. In a call with donors, Wildcats AD Barnhart noted that all FB fans with season tickets would be covered. (link)
More on Schutt's Splash Shield, a facial visor for FB helmets aimed at blocking exposure to COVID-19 and other communicable diseases. The two-part shield can attach to any helmet, and the company says around 50 DI Programs have so far put in orders. NCAA CMO Hainline, who says Schutt is the only company offering such visors at this time, emphasizes the importance of everyone on every sideline wearing a mask at all times. “That quarterback or whomever is coming off, even if the coach has a face shield, that coach isn’t being protected from that potentially infectious quarterback if that quarterback doesn’t have a face shield or mask on. … If you have a football player wearing a face shield, and face shields are really effective in terms of preventing the outward propulsion of respiratory droplets, then you’re essentially conducting football in a matter that is following really great guidance from the CDC.” (link)
Howard will join the NEC as part of a six-sport associate membership. The partnership will begin with men’s and women’s swimming during the 2020-21 academic year followed by men’s and women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse and women’s golf in 2021-22. Howard Prez Frederick: “This move will significantly reduce the geographical footprint that our athletes must travel for games, which will have a positive impact on our travel expenses.” (link)
Anachel CEO Cecil and Executive Director Hermes examine communication challenges related to COVID-19 in the latest update from LEAD1, observing that “the Pandemic Age has forced us to acknowledge what is known and what is unknown exist on a continuum. A public health crisis isn’t an isolated tragedy: it’s an ongoing, ever-evolving series of events.” As such, Cecil and Hermes contend that ADs and coaches “need a communications plan with a messaging hierarchy that articulates back-to-school and back-to-play protocols in simple, human terms” rather than the trite “corporate-speak.” “If you’re an AD, ask yourself these questions: are you prepared to justify operational changes to external and internal stakeholders and constituents in simple language? When the unexpected arises under your watch, are you ready to address the situation publicly with the most up-to-date information and without jargon? Do you have current health and safety protocols for practices, games and for working with the media? Most importantly, do the narratives that you, your staff and coaches are sharing help make your constituents feel safe?. … The information gap is real. … Partisan propagandists are bellowing louder than public health experts. It’s time to take back the virtual microphone.” (link)

+ Of the five COVID-19 tests Iowa has conducted in the past week, four came back positive and one came back negative, per Stadium’s McMurphy, who adds that to date, Hawkeye student-athletes, coaches and staff have had 392 negative tests & 21 positive. (link)

+ More than 800 of Georgia Tech’s 1,100 faculty members have penned a letter pushing back against the University System of Georgia’s plans for resuming in-person instruction. The letter asserts that mandatory statewide reopenings “do not follow science-based evidence, increase the health risks to faculty, students and staff, and interfere with nimble decision-making necessary to prepare and respond to Covid-19 infection risk." (link)
+ The PGA will hold next weekend’s Memorial without spectators after originally planning to include fans for the event. PGA Commish Monahan: “While this was a difficult decision, it was one made collectively, and we are appreciative of the process undertaken to this point that will allow us to welcome on-site fans when the time is right.” (link)
