The Meetup Minutes

Big thanks to Mica Howarth from InnovateHer for sharing her thoughts, hints and tips, and great advice about using TikTok.

What's it all about?

TikTok is a video sharing platform that creates trending sounds.

Users use these trending 'sounds' to create their videos (up to 1 minute long).

The more people who use a particular sound, the more likely it is to become a trend.

Creative collaboration is big thing with one of their features, a 'duet', allowing you to contribute to another users video.

Who's using it?

60% are 16-24 year olds.

The Gen-z Generation - first to grow up with the internet.

Topics of interest to this audience on the platform can be controversial subjects such as gender, body positivity, politics and mental health.

These topics are encouraged and freely spoken about on TikTok by many of their users through creative videos.

What makes it different?

Not great for all businesses, yet!

Younger audience are really tuned in to being sold to and do not appreciate it on the platform. There are few ways that ads can be done and this is through partnershis with influencers and collaborations.

Tiktok have recently released their ad platform to wider audiences now.

Their slogan sums up the platform - "Don't Make Ads, Make TikToks"

How can you use it?

You don't have to create videos on TikTok to get some benefits from TikTok!

Mica shared a few great examples:

1. Make Relationships with Influencers

2. Download TikToks and share them to other channels (Instagram/Twitter)

3. Verify Influencers by seeing if they have TikTok audience
