STEERING GROUP ACTIVITY

The steering group continue to hold virtual meetings every 2-3 weeks at the moment as we try to stay up to date with any changes and news on dancing safely.  Its been very difficult to make plans as you will all be aware but we will keep trying and really hope it will be possible to have an in person social/open meeting very soon.

ODF CHECK-IN AND CHAT  -  REVIEW

The steering group hosted two chats in July. For the first one we were joined by Amantha Edmead who is working for the freelance task force in Oxfordshire. Read more about the work and her role here.

Last week we were joined by Katie Dale-Everett and Lisa Sang from Sussex Dance Network to learn more about them and their network. We had a great chat and plan to stay in touch and perhaps organise a shared virtual opportunity in the Autumn.

We're going to take a break from Check in and Chat in August but will post any new events on our facebook page and email members in advance with the meeting link and details of any special guests/topics.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

Due to the unusual course of the year the ODF steering group have decided to not ask members to renew memberships in September as in previous years. We plan to introduce a new membership offer starting in Jan 2021.

Members were emailed a few weeks ago about the potential opportunity to access rehearsal space at the Burton Taylor studio over the summer however due to changes in Oxford Playhouse reopening plans this is now postponed and may happen in early September instead - we'll let you know.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY - CREATIVE LABS

Any relevant Covid-19 health and safety guidance will be issued in advance of these sessions and must be followed by all participants. Numbers will be limited and you will need to sign up to attend in advance. Creative Labs are free to attend for members.

VIRTUAL CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES

Oxford Playhouse - Mothers who make networking on zoom

Mothers Who Make is a growing national initiative aimed at supporting mothers who are artists and makers, in any discipline and at any stage of their personal or professional making. Started by Matilda Leyser (Improbable Theatre) in London in 2014, new hubs have rapidly spread across the country.

The monthly sessions aim to give creative mothers the chance to explore their practice with their children present, valuing equally their dual roles of mother and artist. Our reach is across generations and art forms – we are thrilled by the plurality of voices that are part of this discussion. It’s a great way to meet and collaborate with other mothers from different creative backgrounds.

Sessions will take place using the Zoom video conferencing platform, with the Meeting ID & Password emailed to participants ahead of each session. We encourage a small donation of £3 - £5, payable directly to the facilitator in the session. To join please email participation@oxfordplayhouse.com

Oxford's Mothers Who Make group will be running an additional session on Tuesday 11 August, 10:30-12:00, to keep all of our creative mothers connected over the Summer.

Foot Notes - An invitation from Jacky Lansley - still accepting films

Jacky is making a series of ‘Foot Note’ films as a way of staying in touch - and is inviting others to consider making their own little foot choreographies to be part of the project. You need very little room to make a foot choreography. The important thing is to choose an inspiring piece of music – and you need a phone camera. Be careful of slippery socks! Send your foot films to Dance Research Studio

Justice in Motion Loneliness Project - looking for participants

Moving Together is a new project exploring loneliness and belonging. Justice in Motion are working in partnership with anthropology researcher Dr Bronwyn Tarr, from the University of Oxford.

"Can we ease feelings of loneliness using movement and music? This exciting project looks at the nature of loneliness and belonging. Moving Together shows how shared experiences are important for personal and community health. Recently the issue has become more relevant as so many of us feel a sense of isolation.

Over the coming months we will be working with members of the public who are affected by loneliness and asking them to share their thoughts and ideas about how they feel. These will be turned into, drawings, movements, video and more as ‘seeds’ of inspiration that express their emotions. Choreographer Gemma Peramiquel and dancers will translate those seeds into short dance pieces (gifts) to soundtracks made by composer Quentin Lachapele. Film maker Michael Lynch will record these gifts to share online and combine them for an online ‘flashmob’ experience, bringing people together in synchronised movement."

Read the participant call out and email Anja Meinhardt or Dr Bronwyn Tarr to find out more.

   OPPORTUNITIES AND COMMISSIONS

Oxford Stories: OPEN CALL Deadline: 7th Aug

Respond artistically to a story of how someone has been affected by the pandemic.

We will pay £200 for each piece commissioned.

When the COVID-19 lockdown began, Oxford Hub knew it had to act. Within days, Oxford Together had sprung up: the city’s community response to the pandemic, bringing people together to help each other.

Arts at the Old Fire Station (AOFS) have teamed up with Oxford Hub to collect stories from people involved – as volunteers, people receiving support, community organisers, paid workers and more.

The stories paint a vivid picture of a city coming together under lockdown. What’s it like to be the only student left in your college? To be at the front-line of a service helping society’s most vulnerable people? To take an exam when you have COVID-19? To bring your neighbours together in support of someone bereaved?

We are looking for artists to respond to one of these stories in a medium of their choice.

Each story was collected using the Storytelling Evaluation Methodology. They are no longer than two pages of A4. Click here to read an example story You will be allocated a story – not necessarily this one.
