Keeping connected

I write this having just heard the welcome news of a £1.57bn culture support package from the Government for music venues, theatres, museums and galleries.

This is an announcement that many of us have been waiting and campaigning for over the last few months - it is important to continue the campaign however to make sure that Cornwall receives its fair share and that the funding is distributed in ways that can deliver the best outcomes for both the creative sector and the whole community.

There are also signs that arts funding bodies are returning to pre-Covid priorities - you can read about the funds from the Baring Foundation and the return of Arts Council project grants below.

There's a link to a lovely film showcasing the Daily Haiku plus details of our regular Connect meeting on Wednesday this week.

If you want to discuss anything in this newsletter, have information to share or just want to connect up, please get in touch.

Best wishes

Jayne

Arts Well: Connect

Our weekly Connect meeting is between 3 and 4 this Wednesday afternoon. It's free to attend but please register here so that you get the zoom link and I know how many to expect.

This week we will be joined by Mark of Printed by Us,  a social enterprise which
runs screen printing workshops to teach homeless and vulnerable people how to print and move forward towards employability. He is hoping to set up the programme here in Cornwall. If you would like to find out more, or can help Mark with ideas about how this can work please join us.

We would also like to hear about what you are doing, your experiences during lockdown, how you hope to move forward and any help or support you need or can offer.

Arts Well: Grow

There are still places available for our workshop on Tuesday 14th July focusing on Outcomes and Evaluation. Click on the link to find out more details and book a place. We will be taking a breakuntil the autumn when we will schedule a new programme.

I plan to put that programme together over the next couple of months - if there is an arts and health related topic that you would like to see covered, please let me know and I will see what I can develop.

I will continue to provide online workshops as well as face to face when it is safe to do so.

The Daily Haiku

Amanda White set up The Daily Haiku at the start of the UK Lockdown as an accessible, creative and engaging Facebook group. The group has over  2250 members to date and the group recently celebrated 100 days of the Daily Haiku by making a film of members reading their poems. You can see it here.

Funding opportunities

The Baring Foundation has announced the first call for applications in a new arts programme supporting Arts and Mental Health. They are offering modest, unrestricted grants to established organisations in the UK that focus solely on offering creative opportunities to people of any age living with mental health problems using the skills of professionally trained artists. For more information visit their website.

Arts Council England have also announced that their Project Grants will be open for applications again from 22nd July. You can sign up for updates and information here.

Calling all theatre and performance freelancers

On 12 June a national taskforce of self-employed theatre and performance makers was announced following an open letter by Fuel Theatre (you can see the letter here). The aim of the task force is to strengthen the influence of the self-employed community in national conversations about how the performing arts sector responds to and recovers from the impact of Covid-19.

Cornwall is being represented on the taskforce by Miranda Henderson, Alister O'Loughlin, Emily Alden and Catherine Lake.

They are keen for all freelancers in Cornwall in the theatre, dance, creative arts industry to contribute their views but will need you to opt-in to get involved. You can find out more and do that here.

You can also email them at cornishfreelancers@gmail.com with your concerns, points of action, needs and things you want brought to the attention of organisations such as Arts Council England, Equity, Bectu.

Mindful Colouring Cards

From Acorns to Oaks is a local organisation with a focus on nature and mindfulness. They have produced a beautiful set of cards for mindful colouring with designs all inspired by natural forms. The cards have all been hand-drawn and have a pattern repeat.

Each pack includes 8 different designs on postcards, an information sheet and an oak leaf practice card and costs £4.50 including postage. You can buy two packs for £7.50 and either have one posted to a second address or From Acorns to Oaks will donate it to a mental health charity.

By buying two packs you can support a local business, support someone else's mental health and enjoy a mindful creative activity to support your own wellbeing.

Supporting the lives of people with dementia and their loved ones

Make it Better CIC is developing collaborative activity packs for people with dementia and their families in Cornwall. They are prioritising working with families whose loved ones live in a care home that they cannot visit at present, so the activity would connect them at a distance.

With the support of care professionals, the person with dementia would work on one stage of an arts process that would then be sent to another family member to complete, with the final piece being sent back to the original person.

If you know anyone who might be interested in engaging with this project or would like to know more please email Ruth here or call her on 07800 586315.

Creative Hub: South West Forum

Creative Hub Forums are an opportunity for creative organisations to find out more about the Creative Industries Federation. With guest speakers from creative businesses across your local area, their chief executive will lead a group discussion aimed at fostering local collaboration and connections through the Fed’s creative network. Conversations will influence their advocacy work which takes place at national and local government level.

The South West forum is this Thursday between 10.30 and 11.30 and is open to people in the counties of Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall & Isles of Scilly.
