HOME Slough launches Summer Programme 2020

Global Cooking Theatre
Online Cooking and Story Telling to Help You Brush Up on Your Kitchen Skills During Quarantine

Saturday’s at 11am or 3pm, Online Via Zoom
We’ve all been told that in order to maintain a little sanity when self-isolating, it’s good to get routine going. So, at 11am on Saturday 11 July, and for the next 6 weeks, we’ll be tuning into Global Cooking Theatre on Zoom, to learn how to prepare a mouth-watering array of recipes and share food and stories from four different continents: Europe, South Asia, Caribbean and Africa. The Global Cooking Theatre will take you on a journey to learn how to create a nutritional and colourful work of art on a plate! Each week our Artistic Nutritional Creatives (The Chefs!) will dress up in their national traditional dress and take the audience on a tour of their culture and share the secrets of their food with you. The intention is to have fun, learn how to cook a new meal, connect with new people and learn about other cultures.
Our first show will be hosted by Sneeta, who will be preparing stuffed spicy  potato paratha (stuffed flat bread), cabbage and carrot sambharo, raita (yogurt with grated onion, cucumber and toasted cumin) and mango pickle (optional). Sneeta, who was born in Wolverhampton to parents from the Punjab in India, works in a local primary school as a HR and Premises Manager. She said “I’m so excited to be a part of the Global Cooking Theatre Project. It will help increase my confidence; the thought of having to talk on a video terrifies me, but on the other hand I am really looking forward to this.  I’ve chosen to make a vegetarian brunch; which was a real Saturday morning treat when I was growing up, but  you can  adapt this recipe by adding either tuna fish or egg if you prefer”.

 How does it work?
Each week participants will be shown how to create delicious and affordable meals from around the world.
Reserve your place to receive a list of all the ingredients you’ll need and a link to the Zoom webinar.
At 11am or 3pm each Saturday (depending on the session join our Artistic Nutritional Creatives (The Chefs!) in a Zoom webinar to cook your meal together.
While your meal is in the oven, go offline to change for dinner and serve up, re-joining the group, to enjoy your meal, together with your chef and other participants. The chefs will be sharing stories about their meals, dresses and culture.

This project was co-created by Vision Impression Black Expression (VIBE) and Slough Dominican Association (SDA) and HOME Slough.

Virtual photography exhibition celebrating the lives of Slough’s
refugees and asylum seekers

From Monday 13 July
HOME Slough in collaboration with local photographer
Simon Barber is staging a one-man exhibition entirely through our weekly newsletters. Each week we’ll publish two of Simon’s  amazing photographs, for you to consider and comment on in whatever way you wish; for example you might like to share your own stories or experience with Simon, put forward ideas for further imagery, or share examples of your own work with Simon and us as we try to break down barriers and get a conversation going on this topic, in an open, creative and inclusive way.

 About this exhibition
Simon said “In 2019 I was interested in investigating the experiences of refugees and asylum seekers, as a follow on to my work on immigrants who had been living here in the UK for several years.  At the time, while much had been documented about their journeys and experiences while travelling to the UK, very little was being recorded about their experiences after they had arrived here.  While I was helping out with English classes at Slough Refugee Support (a charity based in Slough),I got to know and work with some wonderful people, many of whom trusted me with their stories and helped me understand some of the issues they’ve faced since coming to the UK. This dialogue turned into an exciting body of work that shows, in the words of murdered MP Jo Cox that as a community “We have more in common than that which divides us”.
Not all of Simon’s amazing photographs include images of people, some include abstract imagery,  this is because some of Simon’s subjects didn’t want their photos included in this exhibition for fear of consequences (to either themselves or their friends and families), but all of the imagery represented  will relate in some way back to their direct experiences.
