Introducing

Fiona Jenkinson
About me
I was born in Surrey and various jobs eventually brought me to live in Walkington. I have had a fairly diverse career, starting with a degree in Zoology but working through peatland ecology then saltmarsh ecology with the Nature Conservancy Council. I came to this area when I was head-hunted for a coastal ecology consultancy job at Hull University.

I met my husband Paul through Beverley Operatic Society (now Beverley Musical Theatre where our whole family are still active), and we celebrated our silver wedding anniversary last September. When our two daughters, Zoë and Emma, were born I had a very short career break and then started volunteering at the Beverley Guildhall, where I am now the Curator. I am now also doing an MSc in Zoo Management, possibly in an attempt to re-capture my lost youth.

My connection with St Mary’s Church
It was really the music that brought me to the church. I met Alan Binnington (former organist and choir master) many years ago when I auditioned to join Beverley Chamber Choir. I sang with the Chamber Choir for seven years before deciding to leave and come, with Zoë and Emma, to St Mary’s choir in January 2010. I now also produce The Pilgrim Rabbit newsletter because I wanted to do something useful for the church community and the heritage of the church.

What brings me joy
My children, and everything they do! They are both wonderful musicians and two of my most joyful moments were when Zoë sang the solo of O Holy Night at the Beverley High School carol concert in the Minster, and when Emma played the Victorian Kitchen Garden suite on the clarinet at one of the High School’s musical soirees. I also love sunsets, and little contrasts like drinking champagne with fish and chips.

What I am passionate about
I am passionate about conservation (I originally wanted to save an animal species, now I am conserving a building), everything to do with animals, music, and being a considerate person.

What encourages my faith
It was music that brought me to the church, and it is mostly the music that keeps me there. But in St Mary's I have also found the community that I think I have been missing for most of the rest of my life. Although I would not say I have a strong faith as such, I do find that Becky’s sermons often encourage me to think more about faith than I have done before, and it was with Becky that I felt able to take the step to Confirmation.

(also broadcast on Facebook)

A simple form of evening prayer and candle lighting *

At St Mary's we would like to invite you to join us in a short time of prayer every day at 7pm. It involves lighting a candle and placing it in the window and then saying the following prayers as individuals or as households.  You can join with others in these prayers on our Facebook page.

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The following may be listened to You are centre

The reading for the day (see below)**

The candle is lit and the following prayer is said
Heavenly Father, accept this burning candle as a sign of faith and love.
Like this candle, bring light into our world
Even as this candle is lit may we know your presence
and be consumed in the warmth of your love.
In your mercy, Lord hear our prayer.

In peace we will lie down and sleep;
for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus
for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning
so do we look for you, O Christ.

The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace.Amen.
