From COVID-19 to climate disruption, from racial injustice to rising inequalities, we are a world in turmoil.
At the same time, we are an international community with an enduring vision – embodied in the United Nations Charter, which marks its 75th anniversary this year. That vision of a better future — based on the values of equality, mutual respect and international cooperation — has helped us to avoid a Third World War that would have had catastrophic consequences for life on our planet.
Our shared challenge is to channel that collective spirit and rise to this moment of trial and test.

UNESCO campaign challenges our perceptions of what back to normal should mean in the post-COVID-19 era.
UNESCO was founded in the wake of the World War II, born of the conviction that the unprecedented conflict could give rise to a better, more united world. Since wars begin in the minds of men and women, it is in the minds of men and women that a better world must be constructed, argued the Organization’s founders. Their idea is more pertinent than ever as countries begin to emerge from the global COVID-19 crisis, which has called into question our priorities, our ways of life and the functioning of our societies. Missed targets have resulted in 3.5 million more HIV infections and 820 000 more AIDS-related deaths since 2015 than if the world was on track to meet the 2020 targets. In addition, the response could be set back further, by 10 years or more, if the COVID-19 pandemic results in severe disruptions to HIV services.

The Second Counter-Terrorism Week at the United Nations was anticipated to take place from 29 June to 3 July 2020 at the UN Headquarters, New York. This 2020 Counter-Terrorism Week was planned to include the Seventh Biennial Review of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, the first ever United Nations Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism, as well as the Second United Nations High-Level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States.
Due to the COVID-19 crisis and following the decision of the General Assembly to postpone the review of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy to its 75th session, the entire 2020 Counter-Terrorism Week is postponed.
“Strategic and Practical Challenges of Countering Terrorism in a Global Pandemic Environment” is the theme for this year’s Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week, held from 6-10 July. The opening two-hour high-level session will be live via webcast on Monday, 6 July at 10:00 am EST.

This week we launched a report that assesses the economic consequences of COVID-19 in the global tourism sector. The report forecasts that the sector could lose at least $1.2 trillion, or 1.5% of the global gross domestic product, having been placed at a standstill for nearly four months due to the pandemic.
We also launched, together with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), a report that outlines the investment measures implemented by G20 countries amid the pandemic.
Last week, we rolled out a one-stop shop to support firms, especially smaller businesses, in a post-COVID-19 world, together with the International Trade Centre (ITC) and WTO, as the world marked the international day celebrating the importance of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
