WCD is committed to being a place where the creative work of BIPOC people is presented, encouraged, and shared. We are educating ourselves and are listening to the Black and Indigenous leaders in our community.

We are adding a commitment to diversity in the art form to our mandate and are committed to engaging contemporary dance artists from BIPOC and other marginalized groups.

WCD is thrilled to commission a new work by Jera Wolfe.

Jera Wolfe will be in residence at Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers for four weeks this season. His focus will be the creation of a new work for WCD’s 2020-2021 subscription series.

Born in Toronto, Canada, Dora winner Jera Wolfe is a choreographer and performer of Métis heritage and is an Associate Artist with Red Sky Performance.


Jera is the official Canadian choreographer for the National Ballet School's Sharing Dance Day 2020 and the Ontario Ambassador for International Dance Day 2020.

His captivating choreography has awarded him the 2019 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Original Choreography for Trace. He has demonstrated an impressive repertoire of works presented by Canadian Stage, Fall For Dance North, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Festival des arts de Saint-Sauveur, Danse Danse, and Jacob's Pillow.

His recent works include "Bare" choreographed at Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet, "Trace" by Red Sky Performance, "Arise" for Canada's National Ballet School, "Embers" for Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, "Willow" for the School of Contemporary Dancers, and "Reliance" for School of Performance and Ryerson University. Jera graduated from Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and, since 2016, returned to the company to create new works each year.

Aside from choreography, Jera has also performed in many dance performances including, Peggy Baker Dance Projects, who we are in the dark, as part of the Holland Dance Festival.

WCD participated in a video project featuring artists from across Canada. The video, which has been viewed over 26,000 times, was choreographed, rehearsed, and filmed with physical distancing. WCD's video features dancers: Carol-Ann Bohrn, Warren McClelland and Shawn Maclaine; choreography by Jolene Bailie; and video by Landon Lake.
