Letter to My Grandchildren
by Parishioner Joseph J. Sullivan, Jr.
Dear Parishioners,
On September 11, 2005, the fourth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country, the Pastor, Fr. Blaszczak, asked one of our parishioners to pen the weekly Bulletin Essay. Joe Sullivan is the parishioner’s name, and in his essay, he recounted how the tragic events of 9/11 touched his family personally—his son-in-law, Richard Fraser, worked in the South Tower and never came home.
In the final paragraph of the essay, speaking for himself and his wife Barbara, Joe wrote, “Our faith has sustained us, and I might add, so has the faith, Christian and otherwise, of so many friends, neighbors and in some cases, total strangers. Regardless of how bad things appear, true faith is knowing that there is a better life, and those who suffered here will never suffer again. That is what I believe.”
Fast forward to two weeks ago. Joe sent me an email in which he expressed his appreciation for the live-streamed Masses we have been celebrating since March. Attached to the email was a letter he wrote on Fathers’ Day to his grandchildren. Joe thought I might like to read it. The letter began with this title: “MY FATHER: Miscellaneous Thoughts about the Subjugation of Black Americans.”

We have the privilege at St. Ignatius of welcoming many visitors and new parishioners. We especially welcome those of you who may be thinking about becoming Catholic. If you feel attracted to the Catholic faith, we want you to know about a program at the parish beginning in the Fall.
A group will meet here during the year to inquire into the Catholic faith, to come to know Jesus through the Gospels, to pray, and to prepare for the Easter Sacraments. This process is also open to those Catholic adults who have not received the Sacraments of First Communion or Confirmation.
For more information about this process, which is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), call M. Fullam at 212-288-3588 or email church@saintignatiusloyola.org.

A member of the parish has offered to take on the responsibility of coordinating such a group and hosting Zoom meetings. If interested, please email me at yesaloniad@saintignatiusloyola.org.

Pastoral Associate Jean Santopatre
On Tuesday, June 23, hundreds of Jesuit parishes across the United States came together virtually to unite as a people of faith, inspired by Catholic Social Teaching and Ignatian Spirituality to virtually call on Congress to enact humane migration policies in the United States and beyond.
Representatives from St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Francis Xavier and the Maryland and New England Province of the Society of Jesuit Social Ministries, in New York City, had virtual meetings with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's and Senator Chuck Schumer’s offices to discuss DACA and to issues related to detention at the border and to end asylum at the border in light of COVID-19.

In his Monday, July 6th homily, Fr. Yesalonia invites us to reflect on the life of martyr St. Maria Goretti as he poses this question, "Where do we place our trust? Do we look forward to holding the hand of God as we walk through life or do we feel as if we can go it alone?"
