Rector’s Message

There are only a handful of stories that are told by all four Gospel writers of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). The stories of Jesus' birth, for example, are only told by Matthew and Luke. The Baptism of Jesus, and the death and resurrection of Jesus are, on the other hand, described in all four Gospels.

Among this select group of stories recounted in all four Gospels is the story commonly known as the Cleansing of the Temple. We are told by each Gospel writer that Jesus entered the temple and dramatically drove out those who bought and sold, overturning tables and condemning those who used the temple for their own benefit, rather than for the glory of God. There are minor differences in the way each writer describes the events, but there is one significant difference in John's version. While Matthew, Mark and Luke place this story toward the end of Jesus’ ministry, John places the story near the beginning. Perhaps there were two different, but similar events. Or perhaps the Gospel writers arranged their material differently.

In either case, the story tells us a lot about Jesus and his ministry, and is rich with spiritual meaning. This Sunday, we will be hearing Luke’s version (BCP p. 234) and I will be reflecting on this event in my sermon.

I hope you can join us at St. Olave’s for Holy Communion at 8:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m., and hear again God's word for us in this important episode of Jesus’ life.

Offerings Update
All summer we have been reporting weekly givings (second column) in the announcements so that you can see our progress and consider how you can help. For this week and next week, we will report in the e-blast only.
Our budgeted givings target for August 31, 2019, is $113,789 (fourth column). The first column shows givings from the same time last year.
The third column represents additional gifts made toward the cost of replacing the boiler. (Total cost: $70,000.)

Upcoming Events
SEPTEMBER 8 - GATHERING SUNDAY
Gathering Sunday is our special, home-grown version of a “Back to Church” Sunday. Our Junior Church children return after their summer recess to have their backpacks blessed and enjoy a range of Rally Sunday activities. The choir will be back in their usual places, too. After the service, we will treat ourselves to a rotisserie barbecued chicken lunch on the lawns.
Free-will contributions are welcome to help us defray the costs. Invite your friends. Your neighbours. Your relatives. We really want to see you back! If you’re able to help with any of the set up or take down, please contact Jim Shapland.
Fridays, Sept. 13, 20, 27 and Oct. 4, 6 p.m.
PRAYER THROUGH THE AGES

Rev’d Alexandra will lead an evening educational series on the history of private prayer. Each session will look at the practice of private prayer in a different era: The Early Church, The Middle Ages, The Reformation and Today. All are welcome!

Evening Prayer will be at 6 p.m., followed by a light supper
and a talk at 7 p.m.
