The Stoma 66 Challenge

We want to encourage people who have had stoma surgery, as well as their friends, family and carers to get active for 66 days and help us achieve a combined target of 66,000 km. Research shows that on average it takes 66 days to form a lasting habit. This means if we can get you active for 66 days then there’s a good chance you’ll carry on afterwards. That’s why we’ve called this year's challenge: Stoma 66!

According to the NHS being active on a regular basis helps improve both your mental and physical wellbeing. It can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke and cancer by up to 50%. Ostomates are no different and need exercise too!

The good news is that you don’t have to be afraid of getting active. There are plenty of things you can do whatever your age or fitness levels, either on your own or as part of a group or team. It could be gardening, walking the dog or even dancing!

Stoma 66 runs from 16 September to 20 November 2019, so there is plenty of time for you to get involved. It is free to register. Everyone who signs up receives a challenge pack, with the first 500 to register getting a Colostomy UK Stoma 66 t-shirt and pedometer too!

Reversal - not always the answer
The decision to proceed with reversal surgery needs to be taken seriously. Post surgery bowel function is a key consideration.
