Legislative Actions Focus on Teacher Preparation

SREB state legislators introduced over 4,600 education bills in 2019 regular sessions, 850 of which have become law. Roughly 100 of these relate to teachers and principals. SREB's Matthew Smith examines how seven bills in Maryland, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, North Carolina and Virginia align with SREB’s Teacher Preparation Commission recommendations related to teacher preparation and licensure.

SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

Time management tools for school leaders

In a new blog post, SREB's Jon Schmidt-Davis examines how the Eisenhower Matrix can help school leaders focus their time on the most important work. The rules are simple: If a task is both urgent and important, do it now; if it’s important but not urgent, schedule a time and make sure it gets done; if it’s urgent but not important, delegate to a subordinate; and if it’s neither urgent nor important, eliminate it.

RURAL EDUCATION

Rural NC Schools Collaborate to Get More Students to Graduation

Bladen, Beaufort and Stanly county school districts in North Carolina are working together to tackle challenges faced by students and teachers in rural communities. The goal: increase the number of middle grade and high school students who are on track for graduation, as measured by indicators such as state assessments, grade-point average and passing grades in core classes.

The networked improvement community, a partnership with SREB, will use improvement science to rapidly test solutions to problems shared across the districts. Full details >

Joan Lord Retires
Joan Lord
After a 20-year career at SREB, Joan Lord retired at the end of June as vice president for education data, policy research and programs, though she is staying on through 2019 as special advisor to the president of the Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing.

Lord has always put the and in “policy and practice.” While at SREB, Lord oversaw policy research and analysis, worked with her share of policy commissions, and written innumerable policy briefs and recommendations, always with the second half of the pair — practice — firmly in mind. Policy is not, to her mind, an empty intellectual exercise but an action plan, a living document to improve the region’s education from top to bottom. Learn more about her career >
