Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - Fairview Cemetery
Parade of the Unknown Soldier and Blessing of Restored Cenotaph:
Service Saturday, September 14, 2019
Each year, an annual service, organized by Niagara Falls Royal Canadian Legion Branch 479 and Niagara Falls Cemetery Services, is held at Fairview Cemetery at the beginning of Royal Canadian Legion Week.  The service, known as the “Parade of the Unknown Soldier”, recognizes Niagara’s own Unknown Solider, as well as unknown soldiers around the world who’ve paid the ultimate price for our freedom.     

The service, open to the community, will be held this Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 10:30 am, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located centrally in Fairview Cemetery on Stanley Avenue.  Veterans, members of local Legions and Cadet Corps will march from the Morrison Street entrance and gather at the Tomb at 10:30 am for the commencement of the service. View more information.

Join as at the Niagara Falls History Museum (5810 Ferry Street) on Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 6 - 10 pm. There will be live music on the main stage and throughout the museum, art installations indoors and outdoors, and 15+ artisan vendors. Calling all foodies and families, it’s apple season and to celebrate, we’re having a BASH! Niagara Falls Farmers’ Market presents APPLE BASH, Saturday, September 21st, 7 am- 1 pm. The Market is located at 5943 Sylvia Place, Niagara Falls behind the Niagara Falls History Museum near the corner of Main and Ferry.

Carousel Players brings music and puppetry from 10:30 am - 12 pm, with interactive performances and crafts for families. Drop by, and enjoy the show, create your own puppet to take home, and be part of the fun! That’s not all! We have a Market bags with artwork by J-Oh Productions. Don’t hesitate, we have a limited supply to give away. Our Market Vendors will put an apple spin on their weekly offerings. Come try apple cider smoothies, apple chutney, apple stuffed pork chops and apple samosas.

TD Tree Days Volunteers Needed
Join us at TD Tree Days on Saturday, September 21 from 9 am to 12 pm, a tree planting event made possible through a $7,000 grant from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.  450 native trees and shrubs will be planted by volunteers at Fairview Cemetery.  Residents are able to volunteer for the event by registering online at www.tdtreedays.com.

The YMCA of Niagara Falls will be conducting warm-up exercises in the morning followed by a tree planting demonstration.  A complimentary light lunch will be served to all participating volunteers.  This is a rain or shine event. 
Niagara Falls Transit - Seniors Ride Free- Senior couple riding on the bus
Seniors 65+ to ride Niagara Falls Transit for free
As of September 1, 2019, seniors, aged 65 years and older, are able to ride Niagara Falls Transit, including WEGO Red & Blue Lines and Chair-A-Van* services (for registered clients only) for free. The new 3 month pilot program, approved by Niagara Falls City Council, will run until November 30, 2019.  In order for seniors to take advantage of this exciting opportunity, a promotional Seniors i-Ride card will need to be picked up at a participating City facility. Proof of Niagara Falls residency and photo identification are required.

*Chair-A-Van services need to be booked in advance and are available to registered clients only.

The Seniors i-Ride cards are now available for pickup at the following locations:
  • Niagara Falls City Hall (4310 Queen Street)
  • MacBain Community Centre (7150 Montrose Road)
  • Transportation Services Office (8208 Heartland Forest Road)
  • Gale Centre (5152 Thorold Stone Road)
  • Coronation Centre (5952 Summer Street)
  • Chair-A-Van Office (5734 Glenholme Avenue)
  • Niagara Falls Public Library (Victoria Ave, Stamford Centre and Chippawa branch locations)

Site location of the new Niagara Falls Creative Hub
Government of Canada invests in Niagara Arts & Culture
On September 3, 2019, MP Badawey and MP Bittle visited the future space of the Niagara Falls Creative Hub and announced funding of up to $3,000,000 for the City of Niagara Falls. This funding will support the creation of a new multi-use creative hub designed to bring together professional artists, artisans, and arts and heritage organizations from a variety of creative disciplines.

The creative hub will include one of the only a mid-sized professional performance spaces in the city, which will be available to professional and non-professional arts and heritage organizations and individuals at an affordable rate. Read the full news release.

Niagara Falls-Ryerson Innovation Hub
On September 3, 2019, FedDev Ontario announced an investment of nearly $3 million for the Niagara Falls-Ryerson Innovation Hub (NFRIH), over the next 4 years. Council agreed to match funding by the City during the next 4 year period.

The NFRIH will be a business incubator focused on digital media technologies. Ryerson's successful Digital Media Zone will serve as the model and key resource for designing NFRIH programming and services, while Spark Niagara's existing partnership and company pipelines will help attract and refer clients. 

The announcement by FedDev Ontario was one part of $13 million being invested in Niagara to diversify and strengthen the local economy, enhance competitiveness in key sectors, and create jobs of the future. Read the full news release.

Driveway widths & parking areas
Did you know that the City of Niagara Falls has limits on residential driveway widths and the size of parking areas? While the City permits home owners to widen their residential driveway, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to ensure all permits have been applied for and the driveway widening complies with all City regulations. New location of the Niagara Region Public Health building
New Public Health location opening Monday, September 23
Niagara Region Public Health in Niagara Falls is moving to serve you better. The new location at 7835 McLeod Road, near the MacBain Community Centre, will open on Monday, September 23, 2019.

Niagara Region Public Heath Services include:
  • Sexual health centre
  • Dental clinic
  • Parenting classes and breastfeeding clinic
  • Mental health program
  • Tick submissions
The last day of the current location (5710 Kitchener Street) will be on September 17, 2019, effectively closing on September 18, 2019. For more information, visit niagararegion.ca/health

Line of Duty Death Memorial
The Niagara Falls Fire Department will be holding a Line of Duty Death Memorial Ceremony on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 5815 Morrison Street, Niagara Falls.  Please join us as we honour and remember all of our fallen members.  This year we pay special tribute to Retired Platoon Chief Ken Boutilier and Retired Captain Garnet Cannon, both who passed from work related illnesses in 2018 and whose names have recently been added to the memorial. The community is welcomed to attend the ceremony.

Saturday, October 5, Community Clean Sweep
Fall Community Clean Sweep
The next Community Clean Sweep event will take place on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at Oakes Park, starting at 10:00 am. Volunteers can collect their cleaning supplies and instructions at the start of the event.  Community members are encouraged to register online to volunteer.
Montrose Road Closures: Update
Construction on Montrose Road from the north driveway entrance of the MacBain Community Centre to Kinsmen Court is now expected to last until October 31, 2019, weather permitting. Businesses and residents will have access during the closure but may be directed to take an alternate route to get to their destination. Businesses will remain open at all times. Four new premium tennis courts (with pickleball lines) will be constructed at John N. Allan Park this Fall/Spring.
