Public Charge Changes Resources and Information
The administration wants to significantly expand the government's definition of the centuries-old "public charge,” term, which would essentially force legal immigrants to choose between food support and other public benefits and their families.  Various hunger relief organizations expressed concern in a joint statement.

Food Assistance Poster - English and Spanish description of SNAP benefits and facts for immigrants.
Let’s Talk About Public Charge - This resource is designed to help immigrants, mixed-status families, and communities understand the core elements of public charge. Public charge handout.
Getting the Help You Need - This resource is designed for people that work directly with immigrant families to help them understand whether they are subject to public charge.
You Have Rights: Protect Your Health - Available in Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic. This resource is designed to help mixed-status families know more about their rights when it comes to going to the doctor or enrolling in health insurance.

Grant Alert

Every two years, CERTs seeks applications for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects requiring technical assistance. Project funding can support technical assistance services (i.e., labor costs only, such as for a consultant, design professional, installer, or student labor) for projects in each of the seven Minnesota CERT regions. A typical seed grant award is between $500 and $5000. Proposals must be submitted by October 11 at 4 pm.
The NAPS (Nutritional Assistance Program for Seniors) commodity boxes are being enhanced. Participants will now get double the veggies and more protein. Some items like rice, oatmeal and dry beans will be packaged in smaller sizes. For more info about NAPS contact Leah at 651-209-7955 or lbaack@2harvest.org

The Banner Agency pictured above is CAPI Food Shelf in Brooklyn Center.  The volunteers pictured are from Elegant Women of Minnesota, a nonprofit that supports communities in both Minnesota and Nigeria. They are volunteering at one of CAPI Food Shelf's Friday summer produce distributions in Brooklyn Center.  CAPI provides wraparound services to a new refugee and immigrant communities, and produce is a great way to meet the nutritional needs of participants from any cultural background!
