Something's Different...

It's not a new hat or haircut. The City of Salem's weekly update is undergoing a facelift. First, in response to our survey last week, you told us you liked "Salem Connection" as the new name by a healthy margin. A distant second and third were "Salem Snapshot" and "'Salem Today."

So, today's newsletter has a new name and a new look.

But we're not finished yet! Please take a minute to look at this week's survey and tell us what kind of information you'd like included in your updates. We'll report back next week!

Highland was formed 43 years ago today, August 23rd, by a group of local neighbors who wanted to see their neighborhood thrive. Since then, HNA has grown to include the Center 50+, Salem's only Pickleball Club, great schools like Oregon School for the Deaf and even an environmental middle school. HNA has a great group of board members who are not afraid to do the work. This year they had one of the most successful National Night Out Block Parties. Actually, they do every year. Pay them a visit at their next monthly neighborhood meeting.

Building Permit Feedback Surveys Headed Your Way

Building permit applicants and contractors can now
expect to see emails requesting feedback on their permit experience. These two-question surveys will be sent automatically by email at various stages of the building permit process. The information will be used to inform the Building & Safety Division's ongoing process improvements.

Continuous process improvement is the cornerstone of the Building Permit Quality Assurance Program and the accreditation from the International Accreditation Services (IAS). The IAS requires accredited building departments to regularly measure the quality and professionalism of the building department.

A City in Action

New development and redevelopment projects are active citywide. According to Salem's June 2019 Economic Development Report, there were 630 permits issued during the quarter with total valuation of more than $210 million, compared with 590 permits with total valuation of more than $94 million the year before. Included in total permits for second quarter 2019, 31 new commercial/industrial permits were issued totaling almost $64 million.
