Whitestone Hill Education Day to Feature Lakota Performer Kevin Locke

KULM, N.D. - On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the annual Education Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Whitestone Hill State Historic Site located near Kulm, Edgeley, and Ellendale. Programs are targeted toward fourth to sixth grade students, but the public is also invited to attend. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch and water.

School children and other visitors will learn about the lives and cultures of the people of Whitestone from Dakota and Lakota knowledge keepers, State Historical Society staff, Whitestone Hill Historical Society members, researchers, and more. The event will begin with an introduction and an update on plans for the site at 10 a.m., followed by several concurrent 20-minute sessions throughout the day. All sessions will break from 11:40 a.m.-12:40 p.m. for featured presenter Kevin Locke, Lakota hoop dancer and international cultural ambassador.

The 20-minute sessions include “Brain Tanning” with Lakota and Hidatsa artisan D’Joyce Kitson; “Prairie Plants” with Krista Lundgren, US Fish and Wildlife Service; “Native Hand Games” with Mildred Hill and Dusty Joshua, Fort Totten staff and enrolled members of Spirit Lake Nation; archery with Fort Totten Site Supervisor Kyle Nelson, Lisa Rainbow, Fort Totten Assistant Site Supervisor and enrolled member of Spirit Lake Nation, and Fort Totten staff member Aiyanna Smith; “Erecting a Tipi” with Rodney Zahn, Whitestone Hill Historical Society; “Tipi Etiquette” with Jim Herman, Whitestone Hill Historical Society; “Whitestone History” with Matt Herman, Whitestone Hill Historical Society; and "Bison Ecology" with Rachel Johnson, National Buffalo Museum.

“If you’ve been meaning to visit Whitestone Hill or want to learn more about everyday traditional Dakota culture, this event is for you,” said Historic Sites Manager Rob Hanna.

Whitestone Hill State Historic Site is a place of remembrance for the 150 to 300 people, mostly Dakotas and Lakotas, who were killed here in September, 1863. The site is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. It can be reached by traveling from Kulm south 12 miles on North Dakota State Highway 56, then east four miles on a gravel road, then north nearly two miles to the site.
