What we did this summer

It's been an amazing summer at IndependenceFirst

Fun and educational workshops

We held six week-long workshops for youth and adults with disabilities, with topics ranging from social skills to adaptive cooking to advocacy through art. We also held two week-long Youth Leadership Summits for youth and young adults, once-a-week gardening workshops and book club meetings, and an adaptive personal fitness workshop. We also conducted employment readiness trainings for youth with disabilities through the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) Summer Program.

Our gardening and art workshop participants teamed up to plant a sensory garden and paint a mural.

Adaptive Bikeshare Project

Brian Peters, IndependenceFirst Community Access and Policy Specialist, was involved in the planning process for Milwaukee's Adaptive Bikeshare Pilot Program, which launched earlier this month. Adaptive bikes are now available to rent through a collaboration between Bublr Bikes and the City of Milwaukee. There are three kinds of adaptive bikes available—handcycles, tricycles and side-by-side trikes—as well as several electric-assist traditional bicycles. Advocacy

Our staff and consumer advocacy teams have been hard at work addressing barriers to accessibility in our community. Visit our website to learn how you can become an advocate for equal access for people with disabilities.

Personal Care Services

The IndependenceFirst Personal Care Services program allows qualifying individuals with disabilities who need assistance with activities of daily living to receive the care they need in their own home, rather than a nursing home. Some individuals may also qualify for assistance with Supportive Home Care services, like grocery shopping or housekeeping.

IndependenceFirst has been providing Personal Care Services for more than 25 years, and department leadership and staff continually innovate to provide the highest quality of care while increasing efficiency and streamlining processes.
