ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Learn how to create your edible self sustaining garden! Join our first of three workshops and learn how to design natural garden systems to produce abundance through a sustainable philosophy of living!

Do you dream of summers in the sun? An edible forest garden allows you to lay in a hammock observing your self sustaining garden with mutually beneficial plants all working together to create a beautiful abundance with minimal maintenance. Vibrant, healthy, low maintenance fruit trees that produce delicious fruit are not just a dream. The fruit tree wasting away in your back yard, producing scabby bug eaten fruit that clutters up your lawn with wasp bait can be transformed.

PERMACULTURE'S INGENIOUSNESS

Bill Mollison, a permaculture design expert, highlights that permaculture's "aim is to create systems that are ecologically-sound and economically viable, which provide for their own needs, do not exploit or pollute, and are therefore sustainable in the long term”. Permaculture design principles teach us to work in conjunction with nature, an alternative to unsustainable and wasteful agricultural practices. This form of gardening teaches us to use polyculture, a diverse combination of vegetation and natural features which support each other into abundance. This collaboration of humans and nature teaches us ethical and scientific design principles through a sustainable philosophy of living.

PERMACULTURE DESIGN CAN:

+ reduce resource dependence

+ cut utility bills

+ increase productivity in the garden

+ improve resilience to extreme weather events

WORKSHOP FOCUS: FRUIT TREE GUILDS

This class will focus on Fruit Tree Guilds. These are edible plant communities built around fruit trees work together to nourish and support each other. Guilds hold water, improve soil fertility, increase pest resistance, and eliminate the need for mowing. Fruit tree guilds provide food and shelter to pollinators and to pest eating birds and insects. The result is more beauty, more abundance and more time to relax and enjoy your garden.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

Please join us for a half day fruit tree guild workshop beginning at the Greenways office and then move to the Food Forest located in the Mountain View Community Garden. Dress for the weather, bring a notebook and lunch.
