Last Monday we met with Minister for Families and Social Services, Anne Ruston to discuss the election promise of the Disability Information Gateway. This is a national information service for people with disability. We look forward to those discussions continuing and progressing the implementation.

September 2019 - Thinking Outside the Box for Rural NDIS Supports

I've just returned home after spending three days at AGQuip in Gunnedah. What an awesome rural event! We were lucky enough to be invited to share a site with The Land newspaper, and had some valuable conversations with country folk with lived experience of disability. 

It was one of those memorable conversations that has prompted what I want to write about today. 

We all know that services are lacking in rural and remote regions of Australia. Even some metro areas have service gaps, severely limiting choice and control for people accessing the NDIS. 

What happens if you need a support worker and cannot find anyone suitable? What is your next step?

Understanding Home Care Packages

Home Care Packages enable elderly people to remain at home for longer while still receiving the necessary care services. However, they can be difficult to understand and navigate. There are four home care package levels:

Level 1 - $8,750 each year
Level 2 - $15,250 each year
Level 3 - $33,500 each year
Level 4 - $50,750 each year

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people wish to remain at home with their families and communities in their later years. The Government subsidised services that are available through the home care packages make it possible for elderly people to receive affordable essential services without going into an aged care home. This means that they can remain living independently for longer, aligning with the desire to stay with their families and communities in later life...
