  The Real Deal

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about "126 Steps To Make One Menu Item".  I confessed to be exaggerating, but wrote about all the details in preparing the delicious food we offer.  I've been mulling that over as I work through the tasks that fill my days.  And the first meandering and last musing on this thinking path is always the people growing the food that we cook with.

Our blueberries have been ripening in dribs and drabs throughout the past month and have ended up in our bellies or in the freezer.  We needed a large quantity of berries to freeze for the winter and to make one big batch of jam.  I remembered one of our favorite growers from our Old Creamery days and gave him a call.

Ray and Sherrie Ellsworth, of Mt. Pasture Farm in Becket, grow organically on land that has been in the family for generations.  There's only one way to put it.  They grow the best darned blueberries out there!  They are very proud of their berries.  They put in the time, have the expertise, and tend to the details to grow the best and most beautiful blueberries.  I've picked and eaten blueberries from many farms in my life time, and I've never seen or tasted berries like these.  Virtually all the berries in every flat are nearly perfect, ripe, and delicious.  No stems or leaves mixed in...HOW do they do that?!?

Amy and I made 56 jars of blueberry jam last night.  We dumped those big, beautiful berries into two large pots with broad smiles on our faces.  We were appreciating their gift to us, to all of us lucky enough to enjoy the fruits of their labors.  We smooshed berries until we had a smooth concoction and commenced creating.  You can taste the love in that jam....from the growers AND the cookers!  It is delicious.  Sunshine, soil, rain; strong hands, sharp minds, and capable bodies; devotion and love.  That's what it takes to grow delicious foods.  And we'll seek out the very best to bring to our kitchen so that we can send it out to your tables.

This week we're offering Roasted Talapia with Blueberry Salsa made with Mountain Pasture Farm blueberries.  And of course Honey Hill Organic Blueberry Jam.  Watch for Blueberry Galettes in the next couple of weeks.  And join us in thanking Ray & Sherrie, and all our local, organic, hard-working farmers.  We are blessed!
