Robotics and Automation Emerging Technology Interest Group
The proliferation of internet connected devices is a core component of the Industry 4.0 revolution- as more devices and machines are added to our networks, our ability to closely monitor and control our manufacturing processes has greatly increased. Along with the increased capability of our machines and sensors, the cost of owning and using connected sensors has also rapidly decreased, with the cost of some basic sensors more than halving in the last ten years. Coupled with an increase in processing power (both on-board and cloud based), the ability for every manufacturing firm to use data tools for better decision making is now within reach.
Of course, it’s one thing to collect data, but without the skills to analyse and process the data in a useful way its value is limited. Many firms are collecting usable data without even realising it or capitalising on it, or not realising the true value that can be gained from their data because processing it requires specialist understanding - it’s no accident that Data Scientist was dubbed “The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century”
It’s not all bad news since the technology to collect the data has gotten cheaper, the ability to process it through off-the-shelf dashboards and platforms has also grown, and providers such as Google and Amazon offer Internet of Things (IoT) dashboard services. For a low investment, a basic dashboard connected to your sensors could be up and running relatively quickly- you just need to know what data you have, and where you can apply it to help your business create value.
So how can your business take advantage of internet connected devices and the data that they collect? Many South Australian companies (to name a few, Dematec Automation, IoTics, SAGE Automation and IPACS) provide internet of things- based services, and the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre has sponsored projects with Dematec and Queensland-based Movus focused on retrofitting sensing technology to existing equipment.
Another way to build your knowledge of how data can build your business capability is the Data Driven Decision Making Emerging Technology Interest Group. Facilitated by the University of South Australia’s Advanced Computing Research Centre, the group explores how businesses can use internet connected sensors and machine data to improve their processes- and make the right decisions.

Emerging Technology Interest Groups
This month, the Emerging Technology Interest Groups (ETIGs) continued to hold sessions to help manufacturing companies experience and adopt new manufacturing technologies. The Additive Manufacturing ETIG visited AML 3D to see the world’s largest certified 3D Printer in metal, able to make components up to 6 metres long. The Augmented and Virtual Reality ETIG also conducted an industry visit to CADwalk, allowing participants to see the potential of real scale 3D visualisation.

Manufacturing Modernisation Fund
The Federal Government’s Manufacturing Modernisation Fund will be opening soon. Announced during the election, the $50 million Fund is intended to support manufacturers to become more competitive by co-funding capital investments that help them scale-up, invest in new technologies and develop new high-value products. Under the announcement,
- $20 million is expected to be provided for smaller scale technology and efficiency investments
- $30 million is expected to be provided for larger-scale projects to support more transformative investments in technologies and processes.

NERA Project Funding
National Energy Resources Australia, the industry Growth Centre for Australia’s energy resources industry, has opened up applications for its $2 million future technology project fund. The Fund supports projects and Australian companies in building their capacity and capability in fields of robotics and artificial intelligence, which are critical to improving the productivity and safety of the energy resources sector, as well as developing transferable skills and technologies that can be of benefit to many other sectors of the Australian economy.
The fund is focused in this round on four key technology areas:
- Remote operations, robotics and Artificial Intelligence
- Unconventional gas technologies
- Hydrogen
- Decommissioning
