The Evil Eye And Islam

Hump Day - Day Of Prayer For The Muslim World Vol. 104

"If you make the Most High your dwelling -- even the LORD, who is my refuge -- then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways." Psalm 91:9-11

Have you ever heard someone say: "I gave him the evil eye."? In America, the "evil eye" look is meant to let a person know how we feel about them in a given moment. Usually it represents anger or disappointment.

The "evil eye" is common in many Muslim countries, but it has a different meaning than in America. So what does it mean in the Muslim world?

The Evil Eye - What Is It?
Belief in the evil eye is found in Islamic doctrine. It is based upon a statement by their Prophet Muhammad, "The influence of an evil eye is a fact..." [Sahih Muslim, Book 26, Number 5427].

As a result, many Muslims believe that individuals have the power to look at other people, animals or objects in a malicious manner that can cause harm or misfortune to those receiving the glare. This hostile glare is called the "evil eye." Unlike Americans, the "evil eye" is deliberately delivered when the recipient is NOT looking

In reality, the "evil eye" is a legendary superstition and a form of witchcraft! This is precisely the kind of thing Paul warns against in Colossians 2:8.

The Evil Eye - How Pervasive Is It In Islam?
Here is a list of Muslim nations and territories where belief in the evil eye is common:

Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Tunisia, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Bangladesh, Pakistan, parts of northern India, Palestinian Territories, Morocco, Syria, Bahrain and the Levant.

The Evil Eye - How Do Muslims Try To Combat It?
Muslims try to prevent the effects of the evil eye by the use of charms or talismans called nazars (see photo at top). Nazars are often hung in homes, offices, cars, on children's clothing, or incorporated into jewelry and ornaments. They are popular souvenirs.

In the Arab world, Muslims use hamsas (see photo below) in the same way that nazars are.

In some countries like Pakistan, Muslims believe you should read the last three chapters of the Qur'an to ward off the evil eye's effects. Truck owners and public transport vehicles in Pakistan commonly place a black cloth on the bumpers to prevent the evil eye.

The Evil Eye And Compliments Among Muslims
It is believed that if you are complimented a lot you should say Mash'Allah (God has willed it) after receiving the compliment to fight against the evil eye. To fail to do so, it is believed that you will become very ill the next day!

Prayer Points
As you can see, many Muslims around the world are bound by fear of the evil eye.
  1. Pray for laborers of the gospel to be sent to Muslims bound by fear of the evil eye -- that they would teach them what it means to be "in Christ"
  2. Pray and believe for the salvation of Muslims living in fear of the evil eye throughout the world
  3. Pray for those receiving salvation to know their IDENTITY in Christ - a child of God free of fear. (Romans 8:15)
  4. Pray for those receiving salvation to discover and know their AUTHORITY in Christ. (Luke 10:17-20)
  5. Pray for those receiving salvation to know the POWER of the indwelling Holy Spirit in their lives. (I John 4:4)

Update on 10/10 Prayer Initiative
As we pray for 10% of the Muslim world to come to Christ by the end of 2027, we want to give you some periodic progress updates as they become available to encourage you in your praying.

An American team just ministered to a little reached Muslim people group in Tanzania called the Zaramo. Praise the LORD that 43 Zaramo put their faith in Jesus including the leader of an entire village! That leader told the American team that he was going to tell everyone that he is a Jesus follower now! Wow! Please pray for these new believers and for the success of the 10/10 prayer initiative.
