Stronger Together

For the past year I've had the pleasure of serving as Co-Creative Director with locally grown experiential branding design company, GIGANTIC!. We're excited to announce that we have joined forces with Image360 as of July 15th, 2019.

Our new, expanded shop will be located at 2 Westgate Parkway (previously Autostar in Westgate plaza). The 10,000 square foot shop will include design, printing and fabrication of all types of signage— from standard to custom. Additionally, there will be an auto-wrap area, as well as a print and mail division under the same roof.

GIGANTIC!, came about after founder Scott David Smith moved himself, his family and his business to Asheville in the summer of 2010 from the San Francisco Bay Area. Inspired by Asheville’s burgeoning locally grown economy, he immediately began finding ways to help independent businesses GET SEEN!, BE REMEMBERED! and GO BIG!.

Businesses such as Beanwerks Coffee, Doctor Dave’s Automotive, Willow’s Dream and Envision Eyecare were some of the first businesses that Smith put his mark on with a distinctive blend of mural art, design and unique sign creation.

Over his nearly 10 years in Asheville, Smith has continued to evolve his business by taking a unique, holistic approach to branding for brick and mortar businesses. Recent companies to receive the GIGANTIC! mark have included Acropolis Pizza, Hazel Twenty, Scout Boutique, Scorch Fitness, Joy Ryder and Underground Fitness.

Now, GIGANTIC! will start yet another chapter of it’s evolution by joining forces with Dave Campbell, owner of the local Allegra franchise and their sister company: Image360.

Campbell has been an active member in the Asheville business community for more than 20 years-- offering print, mailing and sign solutions. He sees the acquisition of GIGANTIC! as an opportunity to round out his organization as a unique “one stop” offering for businesses looking to increase their exposure in the marketplace. From print assets to marketing to experiential branding of your brick and mortar location, we will have you covered.

Together we are excited to grow the GIGANTIC! business model of experiential branding even further in order to better serve the entrepreneurial community. Smith will continue to play a creative role and will focus on sales and marketing for the new, expanded operation.

Personally, I will continue in the new organization as Sign Shop Manager and Creative Consultant.

Inaugural AIGA Asheville event with Ashleigh Axios a huge success.

This month's inaugural AIGA Asheville event with Ashleigh Axios was a huge success. I'm honored to have played a small part in building and kicking off our new chapter and proud of our amazing creative community at large.

Ashleigh, the incoming president of AIGA shared 15 tips she learned from serving as digital marketing and communications director of the Obama White House for two terms. From seeing failure as good data to building the best brands on values it was both inspiring and informative.

Come on back anytime Ashleigh!

Urban Trail Interpretive Sign

Below is a recent sign designed, engineered and fabricated in collaboration with GIGANTIC!Chukk Brurrsema and Image 360 West Asheville with and for Explore Asheville and Asheville Downtown Association as part the Urban Trail project.

I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to honor the legacy and genius of architect Rafael Guastavino. If you don’t know who that is, look him up. Much respect is due.

You can find it in front the Basilica of St. Lawrence, right by the Love Asheville mural which was the first project I worked on with Scott Smith of GIGANTIC! a year ago.

I’m pretty proud of this one and what we’ve accomplished in this year in general.

Onward…

62 South Main

Another one of the GIGANTIC! creations recently completed was for 62 S. Main Street in Marshall. This brutalist architecture inspired piece was another one that we're super proud of designing, supplying and installing this year.

Architectural Sketches

Here is a recent architectural ink illustration for a new sign in the works over at GIGANTIC!

It's always a pleasure to step away from the screen and break out the traditional pen and paper for an illustration project. I am selectively taking on hand crafted art & illustrations like this and the occasional creative design project.

Let's Jam!

Final Thoughts

The observation platform at Mt Pisgah, where I took this photo. was built when I was four. The whole hike up, which is only 1.5 miles, is fairly steep in spots and full of large rocks that have been placed as steps. Hundreds of them.

Though it feels like hard work at times to reach the summit, much harder work was done before me, to make my journey easier, possible even. Life is like that all around us, if you take a moment to reflect. We stand on the shoulders on giants.

On each step I wondered about who placed the rock onto which I was stepping. Who laid down the path long ago and who maintained it this week.

Thank you whoever you are.

Let's go lay down some rocks.
