CONVERSATIONS
Phil Greed, Tonya McIver, Ray Rixon

Animated conversations between these friends and co-conspirators in creative endeavours, have resulted in this lively exhibition of painting, drawing and sculptural ceramics. The artworks interact visually, effectively informing each other – visual conversations that reflect the relationship between the artists and their coastal home.

Ray and Tonya’s elemental paintings and drawings, some collaborative, range from abstraction to expressive realism responding to Land, Sea and Sky. Phil’s hand-built sculptural ceramics are inspired by  natural forms, colour and surface.

Colour the Chameleon

A varied collection of works – pastel, paint and pencil, covering different subject matter with no theory to artspeak about….other than I’m always trying to express the light.

These works are simply things which have interested me over a number of years and are now finally surfacing for air. Washing lines, rural scenes, clutter, interiors, still life…the usual chameleon-esque stuff.

September 22 to October 18- opening 3pm Sunday Sep 22
October 20 to November 15- opening 5pm Sunday Oct 20

The title of the latest Coastal Claymakers'exhibition is Vanishing. There has been much discussion about interpretations of that title.  Does it speak about the environment?  Does it speak about lost culture, lost or changed values? It is always wonderful to see how our members respond to a theme in so many ways.  Much food for thought.  And so it will be interesting to see our ceramic artists' personal interpretation of that evocative word.

Salon des Refusés: from Still.

Four local artists, Julia Morell, Bronwyn Rodden, Chris Wilson and John Bennett exhibit paintings, photographs, 3D sculptures and a video. They offer unique examples of the Still Life genre in parallel with the region's main visual art event of the year, Still: National Still Life Award at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery. These works didn’t make it into Still (which had over 700 entries), yet they celebrate the rich depth of the genre and include approaches which explore collage, the use of native inks and an ecological critique re-purposing the genre itself.

There’s a great line-up for the 10th anniversary of the popular Bellingen Fine Music Festival from Sept. 26 – 29. It’s an event that can rightly claim a place as one of regional Australia’s foremost fine music events.

‘Fine’ music at this popular 3-day Festival includes fine jazz and world music as well as classical works. David Helfgott heads the fabulous line-up. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is his choice of work and he will also be performing with up and coming musicians Suzanne Sherrington and Lachlan Wilkins. Other concerts include Trish O’Brien and Paul Dean with Ensemble Q, the Acacia Quartet with a new work by young composer Alice Chance.

The fine Bellingen Youth Orchestra opens the Festival - always a sell-out event. Oud player extraordinaire Joseph Tawadros with brother James perform on the Sunday and the Festival closes with a brilliant jazz ensemble with Jonathan Zwartz, Julien Wilson, Hamish Stuart, and Carl Dewhurst. There’s also a huge fringe program to fill the weekend with music and song.

Details and tickets at www.bellingenmusicfestival.com. Tickets from $15.  Children 12 and under are free and do not require tickets.

Art for Bellorana Nursing Home

Art, as we know, provides enjoyment and inspiration to the observer. Especially in hospitals and nursing homes, that sort of stimulation is often missing and when provided, makes a big difference.

The nursing home in Bellingen is managed by the Royal Freemason’s Benevolent Institution and provides residential care to 54 residents, many suffering from dementia.
The eastern wing is currently being refurbished and corridors in the western wing have also been freshly painted. There are several common rooms and all these walls have some pictures, some fainted, some not very interesting.

We are calling our local artists to consider donating or loaning one or two of their works to the nursing home to freshen up these walls and provide visual interest and pleasure to the residents. We know from similar situations in hospitals and nursing homes how beneficial this can be, lifting the spirit of those who need it most. We are looking for colourful works approximately 800 – 900 mm wide or larger.

The nursing home manager will choose those works that she considers suitable for her clientele, taking into consideration the problem of dementia in particular and Polly Wells has kindly offered to help with curation.

Please call Pia on 0427 501216 or email cicadas@bigpond.com if you are able to contribute.

The Overwintering Project

The Overwintering Project (www.theoverwinteringproject.com) is an environmental art project initiated by printmaker Kate Gorringe-Smith designed to highlight the unique nature of migratory shorebird habitats found around Australia and New Zealand.  The exhibition will include over 200 prints by Australian printmakers as well as artworks by local high school students. Local artists are invited to contribute prints of individual shorebirds, which will then be attached directly to a wall of the gallery, thus creating a “wall of wings”.   See Just Do It in this newsletter regarding submission of work.
