Challenge Yourself to a New School Year’s Resolution
New Year’s resolutions come with a lot of added stress - endless articles encourage us to become entirely new, upgraded versions of ourselves each January. But real, lasting change is gradual and has to start from within, through shifts in mindset and increased self-compassion. So we’re challenging you to begin this new school year with only a slight internal change. Examine a new path, consider another perspective, and most of all, listen to what you need individually. Below you will find some suggestions for your new school year resolution.

For Parents
Don’t let standardized testing intimidate you - or your wallet.
While well-meaning, we, parents often worry about the SAT and ACT, and we're not even the ones taking the tests! Choose an affordable test prep option like The Answer Class -- and put both you and your student at ease.

Check your priorities for your student. Could they use a little realigning?
Can you remember the last time that you asked your student if they were happy? Or what you could do to help them through a particularly stressful period? Would you like to build a more open relationship about the college admissions process with your student?  See this list of high school-specific parenting tips.
For Students
If you’re feeling negative emotions, try to describe them in specific terms to those in your support system. Researchers from Emory University and the University of Rochester found that a group of teens who could more clearly articulate their negative emotions were better able to develop coping strategies later in life and had a reduced likelihood of becoming depressed.

Consider an alternative take on the “perfect” post high-school experience.
While many students move directly from the stage of their high school graduation to the steps of their dorm building in a few short months, a growing number are considering taking a gap year between high school and college. Such an experience can have profound, positive, and lasting effects on the participant and may even lay the ground work for a more successful college experience.
For Schools
Continue to discourage unnecessary competition among students. Earlier this year, the Anne Arundel County School Board voted to eliminate class rank beginning with the freshman class in the 2021-2022 school year. Students had called it “detrimental” to their mental health and spoke of feeling pressured to take advanced classes to contribute to their weighted GPAs.  To support students' overall mental health, we encourage the use of nurturing language that helps to cultivate a more caring - rather than competitive - school environment.

Interpersonal skills will serve students well throughout their lives, but particularly assist in interviews for colleges and for their first jobs or internships. A college interviewer pointed out that he was surprised many applicants had trouble answering basic questions and being advocates for themselves. If you notice that your school only focuses on the skills that a student can fit onto a resume, perhaps you can consider launching a workshop on confident speaking skills.
