From the Kinders...
The Kinders participated in National Tree Planting Day last term and planted 50 native plants on the sand dunes at Bellerive Beach. The enthusiasm, determination and cooperation of our small group of 9 was admirable with many local residents marvelling at their hard work. The Middlies 1/2 planted another 70 plants in the same location, planting out the remaining space. We have returned twice this term to water the plants and are thrilled to see around 90% of the plants have survived. With our regular care we hope they will continue to thrive.
For our Environment Day last week we continued our study into regenerating land by visiting Jack Flats Reserve on Old Forcett Road at Dodges Ferry. We were interested to visit this reserve which was once a degraded area with little to no vegetation until Landcare and local community members spent time eradicating weeds and planting native coastal plants which they hand watered over 19 years ago. Today a large sheoak forest stands within native grasses and gums. The children were fascinated with the development, and began to imagine what their plants would look like when fully grown. The children had a lovely day building cubbies and forts hidden amongst the trees; playing animal games and building ‘camp fires’ were also popular activities. This site provided such wonderful play opportunities that I think we will return for another Environment Day, and perhaps a real camp fire!
