From Julie...

Our happy campers have returned full of joy and stories about thunder and lightning after experiencing some pretty rough weather at Spring Beach.  It sounds like they made the most ofall  the facilities that the Spring Beach camp buildings and grounds have to offer as well as taking in a few bushwalks and beach adventures. Next camp for these students will be to Mayfield Tuesday 26th till Friday 29th November.

Our Prep/Littlies and Year 1 Middlies will be going on camp to Orana from Monday 18th November. With Orana not so far away it is possible for children to attend this camp as a day experience or they may choose to stay overnight. Most stay overnight, but they do not have to. If you and/or your child are keen for your child to stay overnight at this camp it will be best to help prepare them for this experience by arranging for them to have sleep-overs away from parents and with others before November. We want the Orana camp to be stress-free and so it will be important to plan for success by helping children to get ready well ahead of time. Teachers will share an equipment list well before camp but that is usually the easier part of the experience; getting ready emotionally may take a bit longer so please think about what you will need to do now to help your child be ready for this level of independence in November.

Planning is well underway for our Indigenous Languages Day celebrations on Wednesday September 4th. The Indigenous Book swap will be happening at 3:00 on this same day so please remember to contribute some books and come prepared to purchase a book or two with a gold coin donation. I hear there may even be some afternoon tea available too.

I will distribute Kinder enrolment information for 2020 to Pre-Kinder parents on September 2nd.  Other enrolment information for older children will come out soon after fees are set at the September 11 Committee meeting.

From the Kinders...

The Kinders participated in National Tree Planting Day last term and planted 50 native plants on the sand dunes at Bellerive Beach. The enthusiasm, determination and cooperation of our small group of 9 was admirable with many local residents marvelling at their hard work. The Middlies 1/2 planted another 70 plants in the same location, planting out the remaining space. We have returned twice this term to water the plants and are thrilled to see around 90% of the plants have survived. With our regular care we hope they will continue to thrive.

For our Environment Day last week we continued our study into regenerating land by visiting Jack Flats Reserve on Old Forcett Road at Dodges Ferry. We were interested to visit this reserve which was once a degraded area with little to no vegetation until Landcare and local community members spent time eradicating weeds and planting native coastal plants which they hand watered over 19 years ago. Today a large sheoak forest stands within native grasses and gums. The children were fascinated with the development, and began to imagine what their plants would look like when fully grown. The children had a lovely day building cubbies and forts hidden amongst the trees; playing animal games and building ‘camp fires’ were also popular activities. This site provided such wonderful play opportunities that I think we will return for another Environment Day, and perhaps a real camp fire!

A Golden Wave to the camp staff. For your hard work in planning, staffing, cooking and cleaning, for your generosity in spending time with students needing extra support while away from their families, for your inspiration as you encourage increased independence and for taking time away from your own families - thank you.

Working Bee: Saturday 7 September

Don't miss out! Lots of jobs have already been assigned so jump in asap to pop your name against your job(s) of choice.  https://bit.ly/2GNaijm (If you're having trouble accessing this Google Drive link on your mobile, try downloading the Google Sheets app).

There's a great selection of jobs for everyone to choose from so keep scrolling down. Remember there are jobs for kids too. The two big jobs this WB are the concreting of the mud/rock creek and the painting of the Middlies 1/2 class. These are still up for grabs.

Ask Hannah or Isabelle about what's involved if you're not sure.

The countdown's on ... 2 weeks to go now.

Campers enjoying the sunshine!

The Great Book Swap: Wed 4th September at 3pm!

The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally and raise much-needed funds for supporting literacy in Indigenous Communities across Australia. We are asking for donations of children’s books to suit children from 0-12 years (please NO adult books). You can put your, greatly appreciated, book donations in the labelled tubs inside the 1/2 White Cottage kitchen area. On the day of The Great Book Swap bring along your gold coin donations to exchange for a book, or two, or three to take home and enjoy. The fabulous Social Committee will also be providing a free afternoon tea to keep your tummy happy whilst you lose yourself in a book.
