the direction now...

We've been digging around for the last couple of weeks in our basement & in the garage & in the spare bedroom upstairs. Because that's where we keep all the artwork we've been dragging along with us as we've made our way from one side of the country to the other...

The funny thing is that we've kept bringing it with because we had this idea that once we landed on a place to call home, we'd have all this artwork to spread through the whole community. Like slightly maniacal fairy godparents, we'd scatter them randomly over the whole town. Sculptures & canvases & drawings & wire & all the rocks we've been picking up for the last three years. Because, obviously, if it was a town we loved, it couldn't help but welcome the stuff we've been keeping in the garage all these years with open arms...

HA. It didn't have to make sense. It was just an idea that we came up with one night & never went back to reconsider it in the light of day. The problem is that ideas, whether good ones or bad, weigh so little that they're easy to forget. You can stuff them in a little corner of your mind & have them take up almost no room at all. It's easy to forget it's the actual stuff of an idea that has weight & size & collects dust.

But two weeks ago, we looked at all of that dust-collecting art & said Oh no, we're not moving it again. Yes, it's beautiful & yes, it's worth bunches when we go to sell it & no, we'd rather have a giant bonfire & invite the whole neighborhood for hot dogs & marshmallows than ever pack it all up again. So, yeah, we're in a different place than we expected...

Which is why you'll see originals & weird stuff we've been playing with & things we've stored for years in the On Sale section of Flying Edna. If we could figure out how to get our software to let you all make offers instead of pricing it ourselves, we'd do that. But our software doesn't. So, we just make our best estimate & go from there. Like this detail of a panel from a museum show I did back in 1996.  (There are 14 of these in the whole set & no, this isn't for sale. We've been talking to schools & libraries all over the country about who'd give them the best home.) But our fingers are crossed that it's the beginning. Fourteen down. Four hundred & eighty six to go...

with love,
brian

P.S.  'a different place' comes as a print here & a storyplate here. The art from our basement & garage continues to show up a little at a time for the next weeks. Click here if you want to see what's there now...

thoughts for the week...

This week, as we've been going through things we've had an ongoing conversation on art & originality & the boundaries you need to help you towards a life you love. Here are a few of Fia's thoughts about that in her essay this week: creating boundaries: part 1...
