CHUMASH

Parshas Eikev - Sheini with Rashi

Moshe Rabbeinu is continuing to farbreng with the Yidden and speaking to them, to get them ready to go into Eretz Yisroel. He reminds them that all of the brachos they will have there are all from Hashem, and remembering this will help make sure the Yidden have the zechus to stay in Eretz Yisroel!

When you come into Eretz Yisroel, you will build houses and become rich. You might make a mistake and think that you have all of these things because you are special and smart! You might say “Kochi Ve’Otzem Yadi Asa Li Es HaChayil Hazeh!” “It was MY koach that made me have all of these good things!”

But the truth is that it is HASHEM who made all of the nissim in the Midbar, and it is the same HASHEM who will give you the koach to have hatzlacha in the things you are doing! “Vezacharta Es Hashem Elokecha, Ki HU Hanosein Lecha Koach Lasos Chayil!” “Remember HASHEM, because HE gives you the koach to succeed!”

If you forget and think about Avodah Zarah instead (chas veshalom), Hashem will not be happy. You will lose the special zechus to live in Eretz Yisroel!

Now you are going into a land with very strong kings. They are much stronger than you — but you don’t have to be afraid, because Hashem is with you and will help you conquer the land!

TEHILLIM

88 - 89

Today’s shiur Tehillim is kapitelach Pey-Ches and Pey-Tes.

In Kapitel Pey-Tes, there’s a posuk, “Ki Amarti Olam Chesed Yibaneh” — Hashem said, “I will build a world of chesed.”

Chassidus explains that Hashem created the world with the midah of Chesed. Why did Hashem choose this midah?

To use the midah of Chesed, there needs to be someone else to give to or help. We see this with Avraham Avinu, whose strongest midah was the midah of Chesed. When there were no guests, it bothered him very much! Without someone to GIVE to, you can’t use Chesed.

This is one of the reasons Hashem created the world — so that He could show His Chesed! In order to use Hashem’s midah of Chesed, there needed to be a world to do Chesed for!

Hashem also gave each of us the Midah of Chesed! We use our Chesed when we have Ahavas Yisroel to help another Yid.

TANYA

Igeres Hakodesh Siman Hey

We learned before that Hashem gives chayus to Olam Haba with the letter Yud, and to Olam Hazeh with the letter Hey.

A mashal for the letter Hey is like the letter Hey in a person — the sound that we make using our breath.

A mashal for the letter Yud is “Kadmus Hasechel” — a very deep part of the neshama which makes our mouth and throat and tongue make that sound into words.

We learned that the letter Yud is very close to Hashem, from the pnimius of Hashem’s chayus. This is like the way it is in the mashal, that the way we make words from our mouth is from a very deep place in our neshama.

In today’s Tanya, the Alter Rebbe tells us that really Olam Hazeh and Olam Haba both get chayus from ALL the letters of Hashem’s Name. The only difference is that in Olam Haba, we can FEEL the chayus from the Yud of Hashem’s name — from the Pnimius of Hashem’s chayus! In our world, though, Olam Hazeh, we can only FEEL the chayus from the letter Hey of Hashem’s name, the Chitzonius of Hashem’s chayus, which is also called Sefiras Hamalchus, because the world is Gashmius and Hashem is hiding inside it.

Soon we will see how understanding this shows us what special thing happens when we give Tzedakah!

HAYOM YOM

Yud-Ches Menachem Av

Here’s something that the Mitteler Rebbe heard from the Alter Rebbe about Ahavas Yisroel:

A Yid has to be so full of Ahavas Yisroel for another Yid, that no matter how hard it is to love him (like even if he is very annoying or hurt us), we will still love him and treat him with Ahavas Yisroel no matter what.

Here is a story that shows us that we need to have Ahavas Yisroel even when it is very hard:

A chossid once came to the Rebbe Rashab in yechidus. He told the Rebbe that he was at the doctor, and the doctor told him he has to take a very yucky medicine! He asked for a bracha that it should get easier.

The Chossid was very surprised at the answer he got: The Rebbe told him that he doesn’t even have a little bit of how much Ahavas Yisroel he really needs to have!

The Rebbe Rashab explained: “Do you think that Ahavas Yisroel is just dancing with another Jew on Simchas Torah? Ahavas Yisroel can be very hard! Sometimes it can even hurt!”

The Chossid understood that if he was careful with his Ahavas Yisroel, and was even ready to do things that were uncomfortable or hurt, in order to help another Yid, then the medicine wouldn’t bother him so much!

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #14 - Mitzvas Lo Saasei #16, #17, #18, #19, #20, #21, #26, #28, #27, #29, #14, #8, #9, #7

Today we learn many more mitzvos about staying away from Avodah Zarah, and only serving Hashem!

In Rambam, we are now learning Hilchos Avodah Zarah. This set of halachos has 12 perakim and 51 mitzvos! It takes four days to learn the perakim (3 perakim each day), so we need to learn all of these 51 mitzvos in four days too! That is why we are learning so many mitzvos each day.

The first six mitzvos are about a Meisis:

1) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #16) No Yid is allowed to make someone else serve Avodah Zarah. He is called a meisis if he does, and the Beis Din punishes him with Sekilah. The one who he tried to convince to serve Avodah Zarah is the one the Torah says should carry out the punishment.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: וְלֹא יוֹסִפוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת כַּדָּבָר הָרָע הַזֶּה בְּקִרְבֶּךָ

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

2) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #17) The person who the meisis tried to convince to serve Avodah Zarah can’t feel bad for the meisis. Even though there is a mitzvah of Ve’ahavta Leraeiacha Kamocha, it does not include this person.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: לֹא תֹאבֶה לוֹ

3) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #18) The person who the meisis tried to convince to serve Avodah Zarah can’t stop being angry at the meisis. Even though there is a mitzvah of Azov Taazov, to help another Yid, the Torah says that it doesn’t apply to a meisis.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: וְלֹא תִשְׁמַע אֵלָיו

4) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #19) Even though it is a mitzvah to save someone’s life (Lo Saamod Al Dam Reiacha), it doesn’t apply to a meisis. The person who the meisis tried to get to serve Avodah Zarah should not try to save the life of the meisis, even if he can.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: וְלֹא תָחוֹס עֵינְךָ עָלָיו

5) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #20) The person who the meisis tried to get to serve Avodah Zarah should not look for excuses in Beis Din so the meisis won’t get punished.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: וְלֹא תַחְמֹל

6) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #21) The person who the meisis tried to get to serve Avodah Zarah is not allowed to keep anything not nice he did a secret in Beis Din.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: וְלֹא תְכַסֶּה עָלָיו

The next four mitzvos are about not-true Nevuah:

7) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #26) A person is not allowed to say that he has a nevuah to go do Avodah Zarah. He can’t say that Hashem says to do Avodah Zarah, and he also can’t say that the Avodah Zarah said it will reward or punish people who serve it.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Shoftim: וַאֲשֶׁר יְדַבֵּר בְּשֵׁם אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים וּמֵת הַנָּבִיא הַהוּא

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Yud-Alef.

8) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #28) We can’t listen to someone who says he is a Navi for Avodah Zarah. For a true Navi, we test him to see if he knows the future. But for someone who says he is a Navi for Avodah Zarah, we don’t even give him a chance!

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: לֹא תִשְׁמַע אֶל דִּבְרֵי הַנָּבִיא הַהוּא

9) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #27) It is asur to say ANY nevuah that didn’t really happen. This means that it is asur to say that Hashem said something that He really didn’t say, or to say that he got a nevuah that Hashem really says to a different Navi.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Shoftim: אַךְ הַנָּבִיא אֲשֶׁר יָזִיד לְדַבֵּר דָּבָר בִּשְׁמִי אֵת אֲשֶׁר לֹא צִוִּיתִיו לְדַבֵּר

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Yud-Alef.

10) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #29) We shouldn’t be afraid of a not-real Navi. We shouldn’t be afraid to punish him, even if he is saying Nevuos in the name of Hashem.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Shoftim: לֹא תָגוּר מִמֶּנּוּ

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Yud-Alef.

We learn one mitzvah about not promising in the name of an Avodah Zarah:

11) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #14) We can’t make a shevuah in the name of an Avodah Zarah, or even cause a goy to promise in the name of an Avodah Zarah.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Mishpatim: וְשֵׁם אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים לֹא תַזְכִּירוּ

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

The last three mitzvos for today are about not serving different types of Avodah Zarah:

12) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #8) We are not allowed to serve the Avodah Zarah called Ov.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Kedoshim: אַל תִּפְנוּ אֶל הָאֹבֹת

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

13) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #9) We are not allowed to serve the Avodah Zarah called Yidoni.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Kedoshim: אַל תִּפְנוּ אֶל הָאֹבֹת וְאֶל הַיִּדְּעֹנִים

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

14) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #7) We are not allowed to serve the Avodah Zarah called Molech.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Acharei: וּמִזַּרְעֲךָ לֹא תִתֵּן לְהַעֲבִיר לַמֹּלֶךְ

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

INYANA D'YOMA

Leben Mit Der Tzeit

In today’s Chumash, Sheini of Parshas Eikev, Moshe Rabbeinu tells the Yidden about the Midbar that they traveled through.

The Rebbe tells us that Moshe Rabbeinu wasn’t only talking about the Midbar that the Yidden went through on their way to Eretz Yisroel. He was also hinting to the long Golus that the Yidden are going through now! This last Golus before Moshiach comes is compared to a desert.

The way Moshe Rabbeinu tells us about the Midbar also teaches us what this Golus is all about, and shows us how we can fight the Golus and bring the Geulah!

The first thing Moshe Rabbeinu tells the Yidden about the Midbar is that it was a Midbar Gadol V’Norah — a great and mighty desert. This shows us the first problem that Golus can give us: To make us think that the parts of the Golus are special and important. Really, a Midbar isn’t so great and special — it’s just a Midbar! Even though many parts of Golus SEEM so important, like being rich or famous — it’s just a Golus!

This also shows us the first way to FIGHT the Golus: By being a proud Jew! Don’t look at the Golus as so important, because there is nothing more special than being a Jew and keeping Torah and mitzvos!

TEFILLAH

Pesukim After Ketores

After the parts of davening that speak about how the ketores is made, we say three pesukim which Dovid Hamelech put into Tehillim:

The posukHashem Tzeva’os Imanu” was said by Avraham Avinu. It means that Hashem is always with us and gives us koach.

The posukHashem Tzeva’os Ashrei Adam” was said by Yitzchak Avinu. It says that a person who trusts in Hashem is very fortunate!

The posukHashem Hoshia” was said by Yaakov Avinu. In this posuk, we ask Hashem to save us!

According to Kabbalah, saying these pesukim three times after saying the ketores has a very strong koach!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Seforim

Seforim have Hashem’s holy Torah inside. We need to treat seforim with kavod.

One halacha is that if we see a sefer upside down, we shouldn’t leave it. We should turn it the right way!

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

Hashem Always Loves the Yidden

The Navi Hoshea lived at the time of the first Beis Hamikdash.

The Yidden in the times of Hoshea were not following Hashem. They were serving Avodah Zarah and not listening to Hashem. In the first perek of Hoshea, the Navi gives the Yidden tochacha for not staying strong in serving Hashem.

In the second perek, we see that Hashem always loves the Yidden, no matter what. We will see this love revealed in the times of the Geulah!

Vehaya Mispar Bnei Yisrael — The amount of Yidden will be

Kechol Hayam — Like the sand by the sea

Asher Lo Yimad Velo Yisafer — Which can’t be measured or counted!

Vehaya Bimkom Asher Yei’amar Lahem Lo Ami Atem — And instead of the Yidden being called “Not My nation,”

Yei’amar Lahem Bnei Keil Chai — They will be called “Children of the living Hashem!”

In a short maamar of the Alter Rebbe, this posuk is explained:

The word the posuk uses to say “instead of” is “Bimkom,” which can also mean “in the place.” The Alter Rebbe explains that in the same place where the Yidden were called “Not My nation,” because of the aveiros they did, they will be called “Bnei Keil Chai,” children of Hashem.

Where is that place? Right here in the Gashmius’dike world!

This posuk is saying that when Moshiach comes, the Yidden will do a complete teshuvah. Then, there will be nothing stopping kedusha from shining right here in Olam Hazeh like it shines in Ruchnius’dike worlds!

Because of this teshuvah, we will be able to see Hashem in this Gashmius’dike world the way Hashem can nowadays only be seen in Olam Ha’Atzilus!
